Waking up in what I’m guessing is the middle of the night considering it’s dark outside, I’m disappointed when I feel around for Hunter but he’s not in bed with me. I’m alone. I wonder if there’s food in the hotel room anywhere. I’m suddenly starving. Climbing out of bed, I throw on a robe and go in search of a minibar. Nuts, pretzels, potato chips, anything. When I walk out to the living room area, I find Hunter with Max.

“Sassy,” Hunter jumps up like a panicked man, lifts me into his arms and sets me on the couch.

“Why are you up, baby? You need sleep.”

Shaking my head, I say, “I need food more. I’m so hungry.”

“Stay there. I’ll order room service.”

I snort, “Is he going to treat me like an invalid for my whole pregnancy?”

Max chuckles, “Probably. Congratulations by the way. I’m happy for you.”

“Thank you. How is Willow?”

He groans, “Mad at me. But she’s okay.”

“Because you’re here?”

Max pulls his phone out of his pocket and stares at the screen for a few minutes before putting it down, “Yes. She worries even when she doesn’t need to.”

Hunter comes back and sits beside me, puts his arm around my shoulder, and pulls me closer to him.

He kisses me on the forehead, “It’ll be here soon, Sassy girl.”

Max clears his throat, “I’m gonna get out of here,” he smirks at Hunter.

Rising off the couch, Hunter says, “I’ll show you out.”

I lie on the couch, pretending I’m not listening, but I am.

Hunter tells Max, “Let me know when it’s done.”

Max says, “Of course, brother,” pats Hunter on the shoulder, “Congratulations, man. You’re going to be a wonderful father.”

I don’t miss the beaming grin on Hunter’s face. It’s a shame I’m going to put an end to it when I ask what’s being done. Because I will ask. The fact that he waited until he was close to the door tells me it’s something I am not supposed to know about. My spidey senses tell me this has to do with my father, so I think I have every right to know. Hunter and I never did secrets and lies. We sure as hell are not going to start that shit now. He may think he controls everything, but he doesn’t. The sooner he learns that the better off all three of us will be.

He brings the food back in with him after Max leaves. I’m starving. My argument with him can wait.

I walk over to the small dining room table in the room and take a seat. Hunter places the plate in front of me and pours the orange juice into a glass.

When I look down at the plate, I gasp as I stare at it in awe, I whisper, “You remembered.”

He pulls up the chair beside me and sits down, he runs his knuckles down my neck, “Sassy girl, I told you, I remember everything about you. Nothing was ever forgotten. Every time I saw strawberries, I thought of you. Pancakes. Same thing. Your obsession for maple syrup stuck with me. I have fucking loved you since I was six years old. I didn’t know it then, but I do now. When I saw you sitting on top of that slide, crying, there was something about you that drew me to you. You grabbed hold of my heart and never let go. Even when we were apart for ten fucking years you were in my blood, refusing to leave.”

He leans in and kisses the tears running down my cheeks, “Eat. Feed my baby.”

I take the first bite and close my eyes, instantly I’m transported in time.

Twelve Years Ago…

Waking up in Hunter’s bed after losing my virginity to him last night is like a dream come true. I’ve never been so glad that Craig left for the weekend. I hate being here when he’s home. The way he looks at me makes me uncomfortable. Like he’s a salivating wolf waiting to take a bite out of an innocent lamb, he’s sure to slaughter.

Hunter ordered me to wait here in his bedroom. He has been gone for a long time and I’m starting to get antsy.

When he walks through the door, I can’t fight the smile on my face. He made me breakfast. Strawberry pancakes, bacon, and hashbrowns.

He sets it on my lap, and I notice the syrup. Maple Syrup. I can’t help but laugh, “Maple Syrup?”
