Hunter nods with a big grin on his face, “After you went on and on for weeks after your trip to Canada about how maple syrup is superior to nearly anything else in life, how could I serve you boring table syrup?”

Before taking my first bite, I smile, “Thank you, Hunter.”

Leaning down he kisses me on the forehead, “Anything for my Sassy girl, anytime.”

“Sassy?”

I look up at Hunter, yanked, from my sweet memory.

“I’m sorry, what?”

“Where were you?” He looks concerned.

I giggle, “I went back in time to when you made me strawberry pancakes for breakfast.”

Hunter takes my fork from me and gets a strawberry and pancake on it and places it in my mouth, “I’m glad they had maple syrup.”

I swallow the bite, and he feeds me more while he talks.

“That morning when I brought you the plate of food, while watching you eat, I couldn’t believe the most beautiful girl in the world was in my bed. And let me fuck her.”

I giggle around my food.

“When I saw the blood on the sheets, I thought I would die. But you were so relaxed about it.”

He shakes his head, “You were a virgin. I’m not small, I knew you’d bleed. It didn’t bother me.”

It’s time to be brave, “Hunter, what is Max taking care of?”

I don’t miss the way his jaw clenches, “Work stuff. Nothing to worry about.”

“Do you remember when my dad cheated on my mom?”

He nods silently.

“After that, we promised no matter what, there’d never be secrets or lies between us. We wouldn’t be like either of our parents.”

He nods again but still remains silent.

I set my fork on my plate, “Fine. I’m not going to be in a relationship like this Hunter. I won’t do it to myself or our child. When we get home, I’m going to see if I can stay with Mia or Willow for a while.”

I get up, walk around him to the bedroom, close the door, and lie down. This is not the way I want things to be between us. But I refuse to live in the dark.

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

HUNTER

My entire world is spinning so fast I just sit there while she leaves the room.Secrets and lies kill relationships, Hunter. Promise me we’ll never have any. I promise I told her.I won’t keep my child’s mother locked up like a goddamn prisoner. She has had enough of that. But there’s no way I’m letting her go either, so that leaves only one choice. Make this right.

When I walk into the room and sit beside her on the bed, she turns over so I can’t look at her face.

I sigh, “Sassy, please look at me.”

With a groan, she turns back over and faces me.

“I can’t lose you. I won’t. I will do whatever I have to. But I won’t let you leave me.”

She whispers, “You promised me no secrets or lies.”
