I nod, “I did.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

Blowing out a long breath, I tell her, “I can’t leave you right now. I asked Max to have someone take care of your father. He is currently tied to his weight bench.”

“I assume by take care of, you mean kill?”

“Anybody who hurts you dies, Sassy. You know that. He sold you to save his own skin when he let my father have you. Then when he owes a massive debt, he came to my home, drugged you, and kidnapped you to sell you to human traffickers. He fucking sold you into sexual servitude. I can’t let him live any more than I could let my own father live after hurting you.”

She nods, “Is there a reason you didn’t tell me?”

Jade closes her eyes when I run my knuckles down her cheek, “I was afraid you would fight me because he’s your father.”

She shakes her head, “He’s nothing to me. After what he did to me, I feel nothing for him.”

“Your mother wasn’t there when I went to his house.”

Tears roll down her cheeks, “She’s dead. I wasn’t always obedient with your father. He killed her as a punishment.”

Taking her in my arms, I hold her to my chest, “Jesus, baby. I’m so fucking sorry.”

She wraps her arms around my neck, “I never want to leave you, Hunter. Please, no secrets or lies.”

I kiss her neck, “I promise. I won’t do anything to lose you.”

Giving her another kiss on the forehead, I say, “Get some sleep. We have to leave in two hours.”

She pats the empty bed beside her, and I chuckle, “Yes ma’am.”

Jade giggles, “Oooh, I like that.”

I quickly take off my pants and slide into bed beside her and pull her into my arms, “Don’t get used to it, Sassy girl.”

She closes her eyes and is off to sleep in record time. I should get to sleep myself, but I can’t. Instead, I lay gazing at the perfection that will be my wife. Her fiery hair is splayed across her pillow, one of her hands on my chest, lips slightly parted as she takes deep breaths. Jade’s lashes flutter ever so slightly. She is simply the most stunning creature I’ve ever seen. And I almost lost her, again. Only this time I almost lost our child as well. As soon as we get home, I’m going to fix the holes in my security system. I couldn’t see from the video how her father gained access to my backyard. That’s a problem. A big fucking problem. No one should be able to get in without my authorization. I’m going to make damn sure she’s safe in the future. If I need to hire an entire army of guards to stand watch, that's exactly what I’ll do. No man will ever lay a finger on her other than me.

Jade was always close to her mother. In her teenage years, they were best friends. They went shopping together, hair, nails, movies, everything a girl normally does with their friends. She always had a lot of friends but was closest to her mom. So, finding out my father killed her as punishment, shatters my heart for my girl. I can only imagine how heartbroken she was when she was told she had been murdered. If I know Jade at all, she blames herself even though it wasn’t her fault. Having a child without her mother around is going to be difficult for her. It fills me with rage that her mother was taken brutally for no reason whatsoever.

My alarm sounds, I reach into my pocket, silencing it quickly, then I place a few kisses on her forehead, “Sassy, it’s time to go.”

She opens her eyes and shuts them again with a groan.

Pressing her face into my chest, she kisses my skin, “You smell so good.”

I chuckle, “Come on, baby. Let's go home.”

Slowly she rises from the bed, stretching her arms over her head, like a graceful cat, “Need coffee.”

Shaking my head, I say, “Decaf only. The caffeine isn’t good for the baby.”

For that, I’m rewarded with a glare. I laugh in response, “There are clothes on top of the dresser for you. Mia got them.”

While she gets dressed, I grab my T-shirt and pull it over my head. As I’m heading to the living room to get my shoes on, she screams, “I WANT FUCKING COFFEE!”

Another man might get annoyed at her temper tantrum, but I love it. That’s exactly how she earned her nickname. By being a fucking brat.

She stomps into the living room after she’s dressed, “If you drink a coffee in front of me, I’m hiring Max to kill you.”

I turn to her, push her up against the wall, and hold her hands against it above her head, “Max doesn’t kill people anymore, Sassy girl. Mia would be a better choice.”
