“Sure,” Liam said without hesitation. “We’re always looking for good help, and you couldn’t have a better recommendation than this beautiful woman here.”

He embarrassed me with a sloppy kiss. How was I ever going to break him of this?

“You’re hired,” he said to Natalie.

His hand found my leg under the table and started its naughty rise up my thigh.

“Really? That would be perfect, Liam. I finished two years of law at Columbia,” she said. “Almost got my degree before we moved here. I hope to finish it one day. You won’t be disappointed.”

It was a shame how close she’d been to finishing when her husband had pulled her out of school.

She slid another card across the table to Liam, who took it. “My number is right there. I can be reached in the mornings.”

He pocketed the card with his free hand as the other inched up my thigh.

I halted Liam’s advance before he reached his objective, smiling at Natalie all the time.

A text arrived on Natalie’s phone. She read it and blew out a breath. “That’s my husband. He’s on the way to pick me up.” She reached for her wallet.

Liam quickly pulled out his. “I’ve got it.”

“No,” Natalie protested. “I invited Amy. It’s my treat. God knows I can afford it.”

Liam whipped out a hundred-dollar bill. “A gentleman always pays for a lady’s drink.”

“But——” Natalie objected.

I stood. “Give it up, Nat. It’s not an argument you’re going to win.”

I’d never yet won an argument with Liam once he’d brought out the gentleman card.

“Then thank you, Liam,” Natalie said, taking my advice.

We walked out together, Liam’s hand at the small of my back, sending my hormone levels rising in anticipation of what awaited me when we got home.

A man climbed out of the back of a black town car. “There you are, my darling,” he said.

So her husband was rich enough to have a driver. Good for Natalie.

Liam grabbed my arm and jerked me back. He turned us away from them and started walking.

“Bye now,” I called out over my shoulder. “That was rude,” I told Liam softly.

“Do you know who that was?” he asked, pulling me along at a rapid pace.

I struggled to keep up. “Her husband, I’m guessing.”

“That’s Damien Winterbourne. If she’s married to him, this was a setup, and you can’t see her again.”

Liam

Winterbourne hadn’t lookedour way. I was pretty sure he hadn’t seen me before we turned around, so he might still think his plan had worked.

“The nerve of that asshole,” I said as we crossed over to follow the path on the Common across from Tremont Street. I couldn’t believe it. Winterbourne was trying to sneak his wife into the contract flow at our company by going through Amy. If I hadn’t crashed the girls’ meeting, I might never have known.

What a snake.
