Amy didn’t say a thing, obviously just as much in shock as I was.

“The audacity is just unbelievable,” I said, putting my arm around her.

She pulled away. “That was just plain rude of you.”

I stopped. “What was?” I thought I’d been quite nice to the spy trying to infiltrate my company.

Amy kept walking, and I hurried to catch up to her.

A tear showed in her eye. “She’s my friend.”

“I didn’t mean to offend you, Amy, but do you realize who that was?”

She stopped and fixed me with a glare. “Yes! She’s a friend I haven’t seen in a long time, and you embarrassed me by being so rude to her, just because you have a problem with her husband. Do you have any idea how that makes me feel?”

I pulled her to a stop and encircled her with my arms. “I didn’t mean to make you look bad,” I said as I stroked her back.

“That’s not good enough.” She pushed me away.

I was in deep shit. “I’m sorry I made you look bad.” It was the best apology I could think of.

She was quiet for a moment. “And?”

I had no idea what I’d missed, or what else she wanted me to add.

She moved toward a bench in the shade by the side of the path. “And?” she asked, taking a seat.

I was still lost. “I don’t know what else you want me to say.” I sat next to her.

“For a big shot with a gentleman complex, you sure suck at basic etiquette. You’re going to call Natalie and apologize to her. She’s the one you insulted back there. And…”

I waited for the explanation, but it didn’t come. “And what?”

“Figure it out.”

I was still lost.

“She’s my friend,” she continued after a moment. “You promised to do something for her. You need to follow through.”

She didn’t understand what she was asking.

“I can’t hire a Winterbourne. I can’t jeopardize the company that way.”

She shot to her feet, walked a few paces, and turned around. “But you feel okay insulting my friend and making me look like a jerk, is that it? There’s no way I can possibly explain this to her.” She stormed off in the direction of home.

I started after her, wondering how this had gotten so complicated.

Women.

Chapter 24

Liam

Amy had reachedthe condo ahead of me. I found her in the kitchen, pouring a glass of water.

“You win. I’ll hire her,” I said with a hopeful smile.

I had officially passed the threshold to certifiable. I had to be nuts to hire Natalie Winterbourne, and if Josh found out he’d probably throw me through the window. But I had to make things right with Amy.
