“Come on, D. I was just fucking with you earlier.”

Finally, I took it from him. He stood up and rubbed his hands together as if he were excited about his next move. “I feel like I should check on my new responsibility, and make sure she stays out of trouble.”

“Do anything irresponsible with her and you better pray you don’t end up in a box.” I inhaled, hoping this shit would calm me down before I acted on an urge and killed my friend.

“Do you really think I would make a play on her?” Axel asked in disbelief.

“What do you think? You’re the biggest player I know.”

“It takes one to know one, bro.”

“I know,Goddammit.” This shit better hit my blood stream quick before I blew a blood vessel. “Why the fuck do you think we’re having this conversation?”

“I don’t play that.” Axel glanced around at all of us. “You know me, man.” He slapped his chest with added emphasis. “I don’t do that.” Then he trudged off like he’d been insulted.

I stubbed out the blunt. “You better not,” I called out a warning regardless and took off after him. Despite Axel giving us a self-declaration of what a decent guy he was, it wasmyresponsibility to make sure Sorina stayed out of trouble. If only for the fact these parties could be more than she could handle.

I stepped outside and spotted her with Kenzie and Theo, as well as her roommate and another girl who I’d seen around but didn’t know. They were laughing and lounging in the shallow end of the pool by the steps. Her roommate and the blond soon swam away to the other end.

Sorina leaned against the pool wall with her dark hair wet and slicked back.

I’m looking forward to getting wet. Her words still stuck in my head from earlier.

She threw her head back and laughed at something someone said.

“We cool, man?” Axel slapped me on the back, watching me behind his polarized Oakley sunglasses he donned, so I couldn’t see his eyes. The thing with him was that he never held grudges. He claimed to be on this other level, all Zen, or some shit, but was he really? “I meant what I said,” Axel added, with some sort of seriousness laced in his voice. For his sake, I hoped he did.

“We’re cool. For now.”

“She’s like your sister, you feel me?”

“I know.” Although Axel’s morals could be questionable—all of ours could be, for that matter—but deep down, I knew he was a good guy and would protect one of our own. I’d be good to remember that fine tidbit, as well. Not to mention, Axel apparently thought we were on fucking brother watch. Which, who would think otherwise? God help me.

“If you two are done with your kumbaya moment, let’s join the girls.” Roman passed by with Nick, both stepping down into the pool and taking their places by their girlfriends.

I shook my head. “Roman is taking this whole Dom Toretto role far too seriously. Next thing you know, he will be calling one of us out to say grace at our next dinner.”

Axel chuckled because we’d watchedThe Fast and the Furiousmore times than anyone could count. “I know, but his family is kind of fucked-up, and we’re his family now, especially after Theo thawed out his cold ass. He’s such a sentimental pussy now.” He nodded toward the pool. “Let’s go, man.”

I descended the first step with my eyes on Sorina. As if she could feel my presence, she looked up at me, her chocolate eyes glowing bright caramel under the sunlight. She self-consciously whisked a stray strand of wet hair behind her shoulder. I watched as a rivulet of water dripped down her skin over the swell of her tit exposed from her black, strapless top, barely peeking out under the water.

I could feel my cock harden, and if I didn’t make haste in my steps and submerge myself in water, everyone around me would notice it, too. However, I deliberately took my time, savoring her look of wariness, letting her deliberate in her head what she thought my next move would be. If her subconsciously licking the corner of her mouth were any indication, she was taxing that brain of hers.

I took another step down. She slightly tensed but took a sip from her cup.

Another step, and her brows drew together.

When my foot hit the bottom of the pool, she crossed her arms over her chest and had her chin jutted in determination. But another small tell was tipped, despite her brave stance, when she clutched the gold cross she always wore around her neck and drew it across her bottom lip. Yep, she was wary of me.

As she should be.

Because she knew she was toying with my fucking boundaries.

“Hey, dude, great game today.” I looked to my right, and some guy who looked like an overprivileged douche was the one speaking to me. He dude’d me. There were always people who showed up at the parties who I didn’t know from Adam. Could’ve been a fan, could’ve been a friend of a friend, could’ve been the son of a wealthy alumnus, or he just could’ve been a prick. They were all the same, and I tried to conduct to myself in a diplomatic way.

“Thanks,” I said.

I guess responding to the compliment gave him the go-ahead to give me a play-by-play of the game. I loved to analyze games as much as the next guy, but my sights were set on something else, which was literally only a few feet away. But thedudewouldn’t shut up.
