“I had a lot of time to myself the last time I was here.” She sat down on the kitchen island while I got ingredients together.

“Eggs and bacon sound good?”

“No sausage?”

I smiled. “Of course, sausage. And coffee. Goes without saying.”

“Put in an avocado or something and boil the egg so I can say I stuck to my keto diet.”

“Your wish is my command,” I said as I put the eggs to boil and then set out to bake the bacon and sausage in the mini oven.

I went one better than avocado and made her an entire salad. I presented the concoction to her in a bowl with a flourish along with a cup of coffee.

“Eat up,sestrichka.”

She clapped excitedly. “Oh, you are the best big brother in the world.”

“I know it,” I said smugly.

She tucked into her meal while I sipped my coffee and forked a sausage into my mouth.

“So?” she asked. “How’s Jules? Y’all still hot and heavy?”

“Ugh. Hot and heavy? Who says that?”

“Not you apparently.”

“No. I do not. And I am not. Hot and heavy that is. Jules is yesterday’s news.”

“What? How’d she take that?”

“About how you’d expect.”

“Watch out for her. She could be trouble.”

“Don’t I know it.”

“So… Tell me about your love life. Do you even have one ?” she asked me coyly.

“None of your business,” I said in the same tone, “So nose out.”

“I just ask because I truly expected to find Jules lording it over here as queen of the castle.”

“Come on, Katya. You know I don’t bring my work home.”

She laughed at me. “I really hope you didn’t call her ‘your work’ in her presence.”

“I barely called herJules.”

Katya’s laugh grew even louder. “Oh God, you are so evil.”

“Of course.” I grinned, happy to make my sister laugh. She was one of the very few people I could totally relax around, and I relished it. I stopped grinning, giving her a serious look. “I’ve missed you.”

“Missed you too, Alexei.”

We gave each other affectionate glances.

“You know who else has missed you? Mom.”
