“So… you’re saying you like me?”

“Yes.”

I cuddled deeper into him. “Well, for the record, I like you too.”

“Yeah, I figured.”

We sat in silence as he just held me for a while. For a few minutes, the horror of Celia’s death and the train wreck that was my life didn’t exist. I sighed, knowing that we couldn’t live here forever. In this torturous peace.

“What are we going to do?”

I didn’t really expect an answer, but he gave one anyway.

“We can’t bring your sister back, but we can avenge her.”

“How?”

“However you want. I have Kirill tied up, awaiting judgement. You can do whatever you like with him.”

I sat up, looking him in the eye. “You mean that?”

“Yes.”

“He’s your second in command.”

“Hewas.” His eyes were dark.

I nodded. “I want him dead.”

“You can do the honors if you like, or I’ll kill him for you. Fast or slow. Whatever you want.”

“Slow.” The viciousness with which I said it took me aback. I’d hated violence since I had to live with it as a child.

But I didn’t take it back.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-SIX

ALEXEI

Icalled Nora’s supervisor and informed her that she wouldn’t be coming in for a few days. Mrs. Smith was suitably impressed to be speaking to one of the hospital trustees and assured me that there would be no problem. It was one less thing Nora had to worry about, even if it hadn’t occurred to her yet.

At the moment, she was picking at her breakfast. I’d made us both a fruit platter because it was easy to eat, and she had no appetite. The way she was half-heartedly moving the pieces of watermelon around the plate told me that even this was a challenge. I put a full glass of mango juice at her side with a smile as I called Katya, wanting to check in on her too.

She’d decided to go back to the hotel for the night, wanting to ‘give us space’. She assured me that her bodyguard would be staying the night and she’d be safe. Seeing as I wasn’t sure who else from my organization was involved with Kirill, I had to agree that it was a good idea for her to have her own independent security.

“Hey,” she answered, her voice a scratchy, sleepy rasp.

“Sleep well?”

“Was sleeping quite well till you decided to wake me up,” she complained.

I grinned. “Sorry to wake you. We’re gonna go to the warehouse to question Kirill. Want to come with?”

“We? As in you and Nora?”

“Yes.”

There was a small silence on the line. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
