“Ella?”

I turn and see Alex Vishekov standing behind me.

“I thought that was you.” He beams at me. “What are you doing here?”

I bite my inner cheek, wondering if he would betray me to Remy. “Going home for a visit.”

Mia’s brow furrows. “Alex, what are you doing here?”

“I have some family I’m going to visit in Nevada.”

I smile. “Oh, we can keep each other company then. What time is your flight?”

Alex glances at his watch. “Just over two hours.”

I turn to Mia and hug her. “I’ll message you later.”

“Okay, have a good flight.” She gives Alex an odd look, leaning toward me to whisper, “Be careful around him.”

I nod in agreement and then give her one last tight hug. “Bye, Mia. Thanks for everything.” Tears collect in my eyes but I don’t let them fall.

She smiles and nods. “Of course. Take care of yourself.”

Alex and I head toward security.

“I’m surprised Remy is allowing you to go home to visit. And that he pulled you from the auction.”

I shrug. “He listened to what I wanted. I didn’t want to be sold.”

Alex looks a little offended, holding a hand against his chest. “I was looking forward to marrying you. That was obviously one-sided.”

I feel guilty, as Alex was kind to me, but I never felt that spark with him. “You were kind, and I enjoyed getting to know you, but I want to marry someone I love.”

We’re about to head into security when Alex forcefully grabs my wrist. “There’s no such thing as love, Ella.” He yanks me forward, and I feel something sharp stab into my neck.

“What are you doing?”

“Claiming what’s mine.”

I try to open my mouth to scream, but whatever he’s injected into my bloodstream makes it difficult to move.

Alex drags me toward the airport exit, and it’s like I’m trapped in my body, watching what’s happening but unable to fight or speak.

Once we get outside, a black van pulls up in front of us, and he shoves me inside roughly, my head bouncing off the floor and making my vision swim.

As Alex gets into the back of the van with me, everything goes hazy. And everything fades to black.

REMY

My heart slams against my rib cage as I search the house for the second time.

Ella’s gone.

All her stuff is gone, and no one knows where she is.

This can’t be happening.
