He tilts his head. “Needs must. Remy pulled you out of the auction, but I wasn’t going to let that ruin our plan.”

“Your plan?”

His eyes flash with enjoyment. “Yes, my plan. To bring down the Morrone family. And once they’re gone, I’ll be married to the sole heir of Remy Morrone—you.”

I clench my jaw. “I won’t marry you.”

He ignores me. “Once I take over the Morrone mafia territory, a war will erupt again. The Chicago criminal groups’ alliance will collapse, and chaos will ensue.”

I have no idea what he’s talking about. Whatever alliance the families of Chicago have, I’m completely in the dark. “And you’re going to do that? How exactly?”

“With Remy and his outfit out of the picture, the other criminal factions will argue over the territory belonging to me. Once they try to take it, my family will squash them and claim the entirety of the city.”

I shake. “I’m unsure how you intend to kill the Morrone family.”

“Remy cares about you, which means you’re the perfect bait. Cut the head off the snake, and the rest will follow to their demise.” He paces in front of me. “The Morrone family is particularly ruthless regarding those who harm their own, but that’s also a weakness. As they rush into situations too quickly.”

“You’re wrong. Remy doesn’t care about me.” I laugh. “Why do you think I was running away?”

His eyes narrow. “We’ll see. I never took you as a girl with daddy issues.”

I glare at him. “Fuck you.”

Alex steps closer. “You remind me of your mom.”

My brow furrows. “How did you know my mom?”

“She was an obstacle that needed removing. Unfortunately, I underestimated how much she meant to Remy.”

I can’t breathe for a moment, his words hitting me like a punch to the gut. He murdered Mom.

“You?” I snarl, trying to stand in rage but being held back by the bindings. “You killed my mom?”

His admission is as chilling as the smile on his face.

“You fucking bastard!” I growl, not needing the answer.

Alex moves forward and strikes my cheek with force, silencing me. The taste of blood fills my mouth as I bite my lip from the impact, and my eyes sting with unshed tears.

“Shut up, Ella,” he hisses. “Your little outbursts are irritating. You’re a pawn in a much larger game.”

I pull at my bindings, my heart pounding as I spit the blood from my mouth. “You won’t get away with this.”

He laughs. “I believe I already have.” His gaze drops to my lips, his smile fading into a sneer. “Fucking your stepdaddy, Remy, wasn’t your smartest move. Was it? My men followed you to the cabin in Minnesota...”

Heat and shame merge together at his words. “I won’t ever marry you.”

“You will.” His cold, emotionless eyes never leave mine. “And once I get what I want, you won’t go to waste,” he continues, his voice a menacing whisper. “Once you’ve played your part, served as the bait, and married me to give me the claim to power, you’ll make a nice little fuck toy for the Bratva.”

“You’re a monster,” I reply, the thought making fear strike deep into my bones.

He senses my fear, continuing. “Any of my brothers who need a fuck can use you.” His words trail off into a sadistic chuckle. “It’s funny that you thought I was interested in havingyouas my wife because I liked you. You’re no one.”

I clench my fists by the sides, wishing I could slam them into his face. Acrid hate coils through me. I’ve never felt so much dislike for someone before. Alex is a very good actor.

“Good thing I never fucking wanted you, anyway.”

He steps forward and wraps his palm around my throat. “No, I’m too young for you, aren’t I? You’ve got issues spreading your legs for a man old enough to be your dad. It’s sick,” he spits.
