“Anyone else hate working with the Russians?” Giuseppe asks once we’re away from them.

Federico shrugs. “They know what they’re talking about, at least.”

“True, but they’re too cocky for their own good,” I say.

Leo shrugs. “I don’t think they’re that bad.”

The rest of us look at him like he’s crazy.

“What?” he says defensively.

It’s odd for Leo to be with the men. He’s often at the bottom of a bottle or too busy fucking strippers to bother with work. It drives me crazy. I’m unsure where I went wrong with him, but he reminds me a little of myself before my father straightened me out. My attempts to straighten him out have not worked.

“Can we trust them is the question?” I ask.

Federico nods. “I think so. Spartak has no reason to betray us.”

He’s right. Getting rid of the Vishekov Bratva from his territory only benefits him. Silence falls between us, and all I can think about is Ella. I hate that I failed to protect her.

The limousine eventually comes to a stop in front of the hotel. We all get out and walk into the lobby, where our contact, Aldo, is waiting with our key cards.

“Good to see you, Aldo.”

He bows his head. “And you, Remy.”

Aldo is an old contact of my parents, whom we have trusted for many years.

“I’m going to get a drink,” Leo says, eyeing up the bar and a young blonde sitting at it.

Aldo shakes his head. “Bad idea. You can use room service or the minibar in the rooms, but we can’t risk any of you being seen.”

Leo clenches his fists and shakes his head but doesn’t say anything.

“Okay, let’s go up to my suite and start on the plan for tomorrow night.”

We all head up to the penthouse suite, getting to work assessing the blueprints of the mansion, which is bigger than I expected. It has to be double the size of our house in Chicago. We’ll need to be careful, as the chances of getting caught are high. And if we get caught, Ella has no chance.

The weight of our task weighs heavily on me. One mistake and Ella could be dead or worse. I clench my jaw as flashbacks of how Alex looked at her at those events drive me crazy. If he touches her, I’ll ensure his death is slow, painful, and bloody.

“This is by far the best drop site,” Viktor argues with Giuseppe.

“Why?” Giuseppe asks, shaking his head. “If we drop here, we have better access to the back of the property. The back of the property is always the least guarded.”

“That’s a stupid fucking assumption,” Viktor says. “The back of the property is always the most heavily guarded, because that’s where they assume an attack will come from.”

“How about we cover all bases?” Leo suggests.

Everyone looks at him, most of them surprised to hear him speak. He’s mainly been silent since we entered the penthouse suite.

“Explain,” I demand.

“We split into two teams. One team aims for the front of the property and the other at the back. We have more chance of success if we split up.”

It makes sense that if one team were to get caught, we would still have a chance of all of us getting out alive. “I agree.” My brow furrows. “Although it gives me an even better idea.”

Everyone looks at me. “If we split into two teams and the one that drops at the front of the property is caught on purpose, it will make it easier for the other to slip in undetected. And perhaps when they take the first team into holding, it will bring us to Ella.”

Viktor nods. “It’s crazy, but not a bad plan.” His jaw works. “I think it will have to be us as the decoy team. We’re Russian, and we know how Russians work.”
