Leo takes a second swing at the lock, and metal cracks as the door falls open.

“Well done, kid,” Oleg says, clapping him on the shoulder.

“I’m Oleg, by the way,” the dark-haired man says as he exits the cell. “Akim.” He points to the red-haired man.

“Viktor.” The last man holds his hand up.

Remy clears his throat. “Now the introductions are over, let’s get the fuck out of here.” He takes my hand. “We’re in the heart of the wolf’s den, and getting out isn’t going to be easy.”

I nod, squeezing his hand. “Let’s go.”

We hurry out of the basement and split up to search the rooms near the GPS signal showing Remy’s four men. Remy keeps his hand tight around mine as we go from room to room in the area but don’t find them.

“Fuck,” he breathes. “The longer we’re here, the more likely we’ll get caught.” He runs his hands through his hair. “I need to get you out of here.” His eyes look panicked.

His brow furrows, and the panic eases. “They’ve found them.” His hand tightens around mine as he leads me toward the room where his men have been found. As he turns the corner, he freezes.

One of the men is dead, blood pooling beneath him. Two of them are slumped against the wall, holding bloodied hands against their wounds. And another looks relatively unscathed.

“Shit. What happened?” Remy asks.

“Ambushed,” one of them says, standing. “Antoni took a bullet to the chest. There was no saving him.”

I see a flicker of anguish in Remy’s eyes before it turns to pure rage. “Motherfuckers.” His fists clench by his sides. “I’m going to murder Alex Vishekov if it’s the last thing I do.”

One of the injured men gets to his feet, shaking his head. “First, let’s ensure we get out of here alive.”

Remy takes a deep breath and nods. He turns to me, his face unreadable. “This could get dangerous. I want you to do as I say and run if things go to shit.”

“But I—”

“Promise me, Ella. I need to know that you will run if you can.”

I shake my head, tears gathering in my eyes. “I could never leave you.”

He cups my face in my hands. “You must. What good would it be if we both got caught? Promise me now.”

I clench my jaw and then nod. “Fine, I promise.”

“Good girl.” He kisses my forehead before turning to his men. “Let’s get the fuck out of here. We have a plan. We need to stick to it.”

We all make our way safely down the hall without being seen and out into the night. The spotlights illuminate us on this side of the property, and instantly, I hear dogs bark.

“Shit! Run!” Remy shouts.

We take off, our feet pounding on the pathway as we head toward a forest. The trees will at least provide us cover from being shot, but I have no idea what the plan after that is. I sprint by Remy’s side, sensing he’s holding back as he practically jogs at my speed.

I fear I’m not quick enough to outrun our pursuers, and I’ll get the man I love caught or worse. Alex wants Remy dead. That much is crystal clear. I’ll do anything to ensure that doesn’t happen.

REMY

Iknow it will be difficult for my injured men to keep up.

Ella runs by my side, but she’s not fast enough as I lead her toward where the getaway vehicle is parked. Shouting goes off in the distance, followed by wayward gunshots, as the guards aren’t in range.

“They’re going to catch us!” Ella shouts.
