“I see.” She’s no longer friendly as she rings it up.

I tap my foot on the floor as she heads into the back of the store to get the medication. I feel as if she’s judging me for what I’m picking up.

I take a deep breath and try to focus on breathing, pretending I don’t care what she thinks of me. Last night, I was too caught up in the moment and wanted to feel nothing between us.

The lady returns with the pills and packs them in a bag without a word. I hand her Remy’s cash and rush out of the store, not looking back.

As I walk toward the short journey back to Remy’s car, my thoughts are all over the place. We crossed an invisible line between us last night, and now there’s no going back. I belong to him, that’s what he said.

Once I get back to the SUV, I climb into the passenger’s side and shut the door.

Someone wraps their knuckles on my window, and I glance up into a pair of ice-blue eyes. It’s a young guy, not much older than me. I wind down the window. “Can I help you?”

He smirks. “Hear that you’re new here.” His eyes drop to the drugstore bag. “How about I take you out tonight?”

I swallow hard as he’s attractive, even if knocking on the car window to ask someone out is creepy. “Sorry, I’m busy.”

His brow arches. “Busy doing what?”

“I’m here on a bonding trip with my stepdad to get to know him better,” I lie.

He snorts. “Surely you’d rather have fun instead of being stuck inside with some old man.”

I shake my head. “I’m sorry, I can’t.”

A muscle contracts in his jaw, and I see a darkness ignite in his eyes. “Are you rejecting me?”

“No, I’m simply saying I can’t tonight.”

He clenches his fists, and suddenly, he’s pulling open the door to the SUV, yanking me out of it. “Stuck up rich girls like you always think they’re better than everyone else.” He growls into my face.

I clutch his hand, trying to pull it off my coat. “Let go of me!”

“Perhaps I’ll just have a bit of fun with you now. Mom said you just got the morning-after pill. You can take it after.” His eyes flash with callous rage. “Has your stepdad been fucking you? Have you got Daddy issues?” His hand moves up my thigh, and I freeze in terror.

Daddy Issues.

Is that why I’m so attracted to Remy?

“Don’t,” I breathe, hardly able to worry that he suspects me and Remy are fucking. “Please let go of me.”

He snarls at me. “Why would I do that?” His hand works at the buttons on my jeans as he tries to get them open.

Suddenly, he’s yanked away from me and slammed into the side of the SUV. Remy growls at him like a beast, and I drop to the floor in shock, my heart hammering uncontrollably in my chest.

“What the fuck do you think you are doing to my stepdaughter, Kevin?”

Kevin, the bastard who thought he could take advantage of me, cowers. “Nothing. I didn’t realize she was with you, Remy.”

Remy slams his fist into the side of the SUV right by his face. “If you ever look at her the wrong way again, I’ll end you.”

Kevin is shaking now as he looks up at Remy. “I’m sorry,” he exclaims.

Remy looks like he wants to murder him, and considering all I know about him, this Kevin is probably at real risk of getting hurt.

“Sorry for what? Touching a girl when she told you to stop?”

He nods.
