“Your lucky I’m not beating the shit out of you out of respect for your parents. Now fuck off.” Remy pushes him in the opposite direction. Every muscle in his body is bunched tightly as he watches Kevin sprint away.

I get to my feet, my knees shaking like a leaf. I can’t believe Remy stood up for me like that. “Remy,” I say his name.

He looks at me, and there’s pure rage in his eyes. “Get in the car.”

I swallow hard and jump into the passenger seat, buckling myself in. He throws some bags of groceries in the back and then gets in, starting the engine in silence. A few minutes down the road, he let out a shaky breath. I don’t know why that asshole’s words have gotten to me.

Daddy Issues.

It wasn’t like I never had a dad, but I craved his presence more when he was alive. And when he was dead, it felt like a part of me was missing.

“Are you okay?” Remy asks.

I clear my throat, trying to push that asshole’s comment out of my mind. “I think so. That Kevin is a fucking asshole.”

He looks at me. “Why did you speak to him?” There’s an accusatory tone in his voice.

I arch a brow. “He approached the car and knocked on the window. I wound it down, and he asked me out. I said no, and he lost his shit and dragged me out of the car. How is any of that my fault?”

His jaw clenches. “He’s lucky I didn’t see him pull you out of the car, or he’d be in the emergency room right now.”

My heart is beating erratically in my chest. “Do you think he knows the truth?”

Remy’s eyes narrow. “How could he?”

I swallow hard. “I told him I was here to get to know my stepdad. Like a trip to get to know each other better, and that’s why I couldn’t go out with him.”

“That wasn’t a good idea.”

I bite my lip. “He asked if you were fucking me.”

His eyes swirl with a palpable danger I’ve never seen before. “His mom owns the drugstore. I think they’ll put two and two together. What stepdad brings his stepdaughter to the woods, just the two of them? And considering the items you picked up…”

I shrug. “Surely they would know from the news that my mom was killed?”

He shakes his head. “No, they won’t. This place is too far removed from everything in Chicago.”

We drive on in silence, the tension between us palpable. We both know that what we’re doing is dangerous. I can’t stop thinking about how Remy stood up for me like that. Seeing him in action makes me long for him more than I did before.

We’re silent for the rest of the journey until Remy pulls up in front of the cabin. “Fuck them,” he says.

“What?”

“I don’t give a shit what they think of me, and neither should you.” He leans across the center console and kisses me. “You’re mine; the rest of the world will have to get used to it.”

I want to ask him what that means.

Am I his girlfriend now? How the hell will that even work?

The thing is, I don’t want to ruin this by saying anything. Instead, I nod. “Yours.”

His beautiful dark eyes flash with fire. “Time to prove it, baby.”

I pull in a sharp breath, knowing he won’t rest until I can hardly walk. If he fucks me like he did last night for the rest of the weekend, I’ll probably die from too much pleasure. But it’ll be worth every second.

“I’m very sore.”

He kisses my neck, and I groan. “You’ll soon loosen up once I get my mouth on your pretty cunt.”
