“Nah, I’m good man. Thanks.” Seb stood and placed a twenty on the bar.

Keaton had paid for their beers before he left, and he was sure his cousin had tipped, but Seb had occupied a seat for the past two hours that could have been making the bar money.

“Thanks, man.” Liam’s chin dipped in a nod as he grabbed the cash and headed to the other end of the bar.

Seb didn’t want to leave the restaurant, but he knew it was for the best. There was no point in torturing himself. He kept his head down as he walked, making sure not to glance in her direction.

The crisp night air filled his lungs as he stepped outside. As soon as he started down the stairs, he felt a pinch in his lower back. That was his penance for sitting at the bar for so long being a creeper. He stretched his arms above his head to try and alleviate the pressure as he walked the rest of the way down. When he got to the bottom of the steps, he was reaching into his pocket to grab his keys when his phone vibrated.

He pulled it out and saw it was a message from Knox.

Knox:Laura’s having contractions. At hospital.

Contractions? As far as Seb knew, she wasn’t due for another month or so. He was typing back to ask what hospital when he heard heels clicking behind him. He looked up and saw Kennedy rushing down the steps.

“Did you get the text?” he asked.

She nodded her face filled with concern.

“Isn’t it too soon?” he asked.

“Twins do come early a lot of times but I know she wanted to make it to thirty-six weeks and she’s only thirty-five.”

“Do you know what hospital they’re at?”

Kennedy nodded.

“I’ll drive.”

Seb pressed the fob unlocking his SUV and walked around to the passenger seat to let Kennedy inside. As soon as she put her hand in his as she stepped up on the running board he felt a sense of calm, of rightness that he hadn’t felt for a long time. Maybe that made him a selfish prick, or an asshole that he was thinking of himself as his sister-in-law was in labor early, but he couldn’t help the way he felt.

Having Kennedy by his side felt like his world had righted itself.

As they pulled out of the parking lot, Kennedy received another text.

“Is everything okay?” he asked.

“It’s just Laura’s sister Lori telling me that they are all on their way.”

“Where do they live?”

“A few hours away, but they were already headed to Whisper Lake because they knew she wasn’t doing well and the hospital is actually between where they live and here so they should get there around the same time we do.”

Seb followed the directions Kennedy gave him and soon they were on the highway headed toward Rosewood Grove where the hospital was located. She said it would take about twenty minutes to get there.

He wasn’t sure if this was the right time to bring it up, but it’s not like there was anything they could do except drive. “So, how was your date?”

“Oh, yeah, um, yeah, it was…yeah…it was…yeah…good.”

Seb felt the corners of his mouth tilt up.Oh, yeah, um, yeah, it was, yeah, it was, yeah goodwas not the answer a woman gave after she’d had an actual good date.

“What?” she asked, perhaps reacting to his grin.

“I just think that was one too many yeahs.”

“It was good,” she doubled down. “Dan is areallygood guy.”

“Dan,” Seb repeated the man’s name and he couldn’t help the bad taste that formed in his mouth. “His name is Dan?”
