“Thank you. Is she okay?”

“She will be. She’s had a miscarriage and is hemorrhaging so we’ll need to do a D&C to clean everything out and put a stop to the bleeding. Otherwise, it could become problematic.”

“Of course.” I nodded, following her into the room.

“I’d like to get her into surgery quickly,” Dr. Scott continued.

Poor Jesse looked terrified, and I reached for her hand.

“You won’t leave, will you?” she whispered.

“Nope. I’m not going anywhere.”

“But once I’m out you have to go to soundcheck.”

“That’s not until later. You’re more important right now.”

“No.” She shook her head. “There’s nothing you can do for me other than hold my hand. I just want someone advocating for me while I’m under anesthesia. Once I’m out of surgery, promise me you’ll go to the gig. It’s important, Dev.”

I hated the thought of leaving her but nodded anyway. “I promise.”

“And read those texts from Kingston. You thought I didn’t see them in the cab, but I did.”

“Kingston can wait,” I said softly.

“Call him,” she reiterated.

“You focus on getting better. I’ll figure out my shit.”

“Time to go!” Dr. Scott called out.

Within a couple of minutes, they’d wheeled Jesse away and I was alone in a small waiting room.

Since I had time to kill, I pulled out my phone and opened my text messages.

It was time to face the music and see what Kingston had to say.

And I didn’t know what was more terrifying: worrying about Jesse or finding out whether or not Kingston was done with me.

I checked into the hotel, showered, and took a nap. By the time I got up and ordered room service, it was almost time to leave for soundcheck and I hadn’t heard from anyone in the band. That in itself was weird, so I finally called Z.

“Hey.” He answered on the first ring. “I’m heading down to the lobby. We’re leaving for soundcheck in five.”

“Yeah, I just wanted to make sure everyone was here and ready.”

“You wanted to make sure everyone was here or that Devyn was here?”

“Is she?”

“I don’t know,” he said slowly. “Sasha said something came up, and she disappeared almost the second we landed. Presley and I just got back from shopping, so I don’t know what’s going on with anyone else.”

“What do we do if Devyn doesn’t show up?” I asked carefully.

“Mick, from Crimson Edge, will step in. I talked to him on the flight over.” We’d invited our opening act to fly over with us since there was no reason for them not to.
