“Anyway, I think—” He cut himself off as Tommy and Devyn walked in. “There you are! You guys late or what?”

“We’re early, dick-face.” Tommy rolled his eyes.

“Later than me!” Kellan danced out of the way as Tommy playfully swung at him and I watched them chase each other down the hall.

“They’re like children,” I said, shaking my head.

Devyn laughed. “They’re okay. I bet they keep things interesting on tour.”

“You have no idea.”

“So… there was an incident last night.” She shifted from one foot to the other.

“What kind of incident?” I turned to her worriedly.

“A reporter came to the house.”

“Ah, shit. Greatty okay?”

She grinned. “The question you should be asking is whether the reporter is okay. We might need to consider bringing her on tour as our head of security. She stood on the front porch with a fucking mop, swinging it around every time the guy tried to come closer.”

“Oh god.” I didn’t know whether it was appropriate to laugh but the image made me want to.

“It’s okay—you can laugh. I haven’t stopped.” She shook her head fondly. “Not only was she not afraid, she reminded him of his manners, answered all of his questions, and then gave him a bottle of water and some oatmeal-raisin cookies she’d just baked.”

“She answered all his questions?” I grimaced.

“It was basic stuff. Is your granddaughter the new bass player for Onyx Knight? Yes. Yes, she is. And she’s badass as hell. Why do you ask?”

I cracked up. “She’s a damn firecracker.”

“She is.”

It was entertaining, but still problematic. “I don’t like that they found your home address, though.”

“It was bound to happen. I’m not sure what we can do about it.”

“In a perfect world, you’d move to a gated community.”

“That’s not in the cards right now,” she said. “Though definitely something to consider in the future.”

“The security system is working out okay, right?”

“Yes. I appreciate you setting that up. And once we’re on tour, they probably won’t bother Greatty much since there’s no chance I’ll be there.”

“Oh, they’ll still try, but it sounds like she can handle it.”

“Do you think they’ll get bored and move on once I’m not new anymore?” she asked, her eyes meeting mine. “I hate to think they’re going to hound Greatty forever.”

“The media knows where my mom is, in Vancouver, and they don’t pay any attention to her at all. They don’t bother Ashton either, unless he has a spectacular night on the ice, and then whoever is interviewing him after the game might ask about his rock star brother. But not often.”

“So it does die down?” The look in her eyes told me she needed me to say it would, even if I had to lie.

“It will.” I reached out to put my hand on her shoulder, squeezing lightly. “Don’t worry. And I’ll see if Grim will keep an eye on Greatty when we leave.”

“Speaking of which, we need to find someone to take care of her during the gig at the Whiskey. She has a wheelchair but she hates it. Is there somewhere we can put her where she can sit to watch the show?”

“We’ll make sure there is,” I said. “Let me make a note and I’ll have Sasha or Dorian take care of it.”
