Heads nodded in agreement on both sides of the desk.

“He hasn’t come tostealWilliam Dawson’s money,” I continued while an uncomfortable sensation writhed in my gut. “He’s come to take it back.”

It was an awful lot of hassle for a man who clearly didn’t need the money, but I understood it. If anyone stole from the Lucianos like that, it would be the last thing they ever did.

“We could find the money and get in contact with Nathaniel Sinclair,” Vito proposed. “Give it back to him and hope the man goes on his merry way.”

Cielo shook his head. “I wouldn’t be surprised to find Sinclair wants more than his money back; he wants revenge on whoever took it. If William Dawson isn’t available, his offspring might be the next best thing.”

The uncomfortable sensation turned into lava, coursing fast and hot through my veins. If Sinclair thought he could use Heidi to get his revenge, he was very fucking mistaken.

I breathed out, making room, keeping the lava contained inside.

“Even if we decide that finding this money is a feasible option,” I said, my voice calm as a placid lake, “there’s nothing saying Heidi has any clue where her father stashed the rest of it.”

Aurelio’s eyes met mine, and I could see what he was thinking.

Hand over the money from our own coffers, his gaze said like it was the simplest solution in the world. That he was on board with handing over millions of dollars to keep Heidi safe sure said a lot about how much she’d gotten to him.

I shook my head. “Sinclair will want what was stolen from him returned. He won’t accept Luciano money as a substitute.”

Cielo’s eyes widened. “Fratellone, you weren’t seriously considering—”

“No.”

There was no sense in considering whether I would have done it had Sinclair been willing to accept it. Because he wouldn’t.

“Bene,”Cielo said with an exaggerated sigh.“Because otherwise, if you’ve found pussy that’s worth that, I’m taking it for a test drive.”

Like hell he was. “Vaffanculo,” I cursed at him, mostly in jest.

“We need a way to have eyes and ears on Sinclair,Signor,” Vito said, refocusing the conversation.

“If he’s been watching the young doctor,” my father said, tapping the tips of his fingers together over his stomach, “then he’s likely aware that our family has been… involved with her.”

It was a fair point. If we had our men getting close enough to keep an eye on Sinclair, it was possible he’d recognize them. But perhaps, there was another option.

“We have several shell corporations,” I said, working through the possibility in my head.

“Arrange for one to be in need of Sinclair’s services?” Aurelio asked.

I nodded, but Cielo was quick to shake his head.

“It poses the same problem as surveillance. If we arrange a meeting with the man, he’d have even more opportunity to recognize our men and—”

“He wouldn’t recognize all of them,” I said, warming up to this plan.

Eyebrows raised while my father stopped tapping his fingers.

“Antonio Verdi,” I explained. “We’ve been keeping him and his cousin ‘comfortably situated’ here. Perhaps, it’s time we give Verdi the opportunity to prove himself.”

My father’s eyebrows joined in and reached for his hairline. “You want to utilize a man who’s been playing around with the Free Birds?” His tone clearly said he didn’t approve.

I shook my head. “Verdi wasn’t there to be one of those fucking birds; he was there to keep an eye on his kid cousin.”

“And you believe him?” my father persisted.

I turned to Vito, giving him the floor.
