He nodded. “His story checks out,Signor. We’ve been able to verify where he was raised and the missing persons reports filed for his mother and sister. He’s got a military record—signed up at eighteen and selected for special forces by twenty-one. What he did in his four years of service afterward is classified. It’ll take time to dig deeper, but in the meantime, I think it’s safe to assume he ran covert ops.”

So, he was either one hell of an asset or a big fucking problem.

All eyes swiveled back to me.

“My gut says he’s good for this,” I told them, and I’d learned to trust my gut. It knew what it was doing. “He wanted an opportunity to prove his loyalty, and here it is.”

While my father mulled it over, I noticed Aurelio’s attention remained on me. There was a sly light in his eyes that concerned me.

He cleared his throat and sat up straighter. “It seems to me, though, that whatever Sinclair is after—whether that be money or revenge—it now has little to do with the Lucianos.” He kept his eyes on me as he spoke. “Our issue was with Bianchi; Bianchi is dead.”

“That hasn’t escaped my attention,” my father said. Once again, all eyes in the room turned to me, waiting expectantly.

I glared at Aurelio, knowing full well what he was doing. The old man was trying to make me step up and declare that Heidi was more than a casual fuck.

Well played, vecchio.

“I dragged her into this,” I said since he wasn’t the only one who could play. “It wasn’t intentional, but the result was the same, nonetheless. Letting Sinclair get his hands on her? Torture her, and fuck only knows what else?” I shook my head. “I’m just not good with that. If you want to read into that, amico,”I continued, looking pointedly at Aurelio, “be my guest.”

My father’s fingers were back to tapping while the wheels turned behind his eyes. “Greta’s effect seems to be spreading,” he mused aloud. The corners of his lips actually twitched.

I chuckled. “Maybe.”

Cielo was nodding. “For a woman who works for the mafia, she is one hell of a do-gooder… even if she does go about it in a bit of a murder-y way.”

My father heaved a heavy sigh and dropped his hands. “Fine. We can arrange for Verdi to get a meeting with Sinclair. That shouldn’t be a problem. What do you propose we do once he’s in there?”

“If we can get Verdi into Sinclair’s office, we’ll use him to bug the room and get a tracker on Sinclair,” I explained.

“Do you think Verdi can pull it off?” Cielo asked. “He’d have limited time, and Sinclair will be watching him closely.”

“Si, I do. The guy had balls, driving right up to the Luciano estate the way he did.” That, or a serious lack of mental acuity, but I preferred to go with balls of steel.

“If he could do that,” I continued, “then he can certainly handle a twenty-minute corporate meeting. With a little practice, he’ll be able to plant what we need him to plant.”

Cielo nodded. Of all of us in the room, he likely had the most experience with spy-type shit.

I glanced once more at the open file on the desk. Edward Sinclair. I shook my head. Of all the men in the world to steal from. What the hell had Heidi’s father been thinking? “In the meantime, I’ll have a conversation with Heidi and see if we can figure out where the rest of Sinclair’s money is hiding.”

Everyone nodded but Cielo.

“Do you really think Sinclair will be amenable to taking his stolen money and flying home?” he asked, his tone thick with doubt.

I shut the folder and headed toward the door.

“He can be amenable to it, or he can be dead, fratello. Either way, he’s not getting his hands on Heidi.”

I could hear Aurelio chuckling as I closed the office door behind me.

Well played, vecchio.

Chapter Thirty-Two

Amadeo

It didn’t take long to find Heidi. After I’d fucked her out in the yard, she’d pretty much glued herself to her patient.

I cracked open the door to Grayson Thomas’s suite and found her bent over the young man with a syringe in her hand, injecting something into his IV.
