Page 36 of Tainted Deception

“A distraction,” I mumbled. “A way for them to get in without answering questions.”

“I’m going to deal with them.”

I darted in front of him, my palms slamming against his chest. “I’ll go.”

“Like hell you will,” he snapped, grabbing my wrists as if I was going to run out of the room. “They held you hostage for almost four days. You’re not going anywhere near them by yourself.”

“They’re not going to do anything,” I argued. “Not since the Riot Crew threatened them. I’ll just get them away from the benefit dinner. If you go, then a fight is going to break out.”

He scowled. “And how do you plan on doing that?”

“I’ll think of something.”

“No.” His one-word answer had my anger flaring, and I shoved away from him.

“Nope. This is not going to work.” I crossed my arms. “Ellie put me in charge of this. Did you forget? Just because we had sex doesn’t mean anything has changed. We do this my way.”

I half expected him to try and grab me again, but he stood stock still, his jaw clenched as he stared at me. “Fine. Take your gun.”

My eyes narrowed. What was going through his head? He never gave in this easily. He spun around and grabbed my gun from the dresser before striding back across the room and stopping right in front of me. I reached out to take my weapon, and he wrapped an arm around my waist, pulling me into his chest.

“Gage—”

“Having sex only added to everything I feel about you,” he murmured, his arm staying tight around me. “You thought I was a jealous asshole before? I see you as mine now. And knowing you’re going to talk to the guys who have a thing for you? It’s taking fucking everything not to tie you up and keep you in here all fucking night.”

I swallowed thickly. “I told you I’m not promising you anything. I can’t. Only sex. That was the deal.”

“For now.” With those words, he released me slowly. “Don’t go anywhere secluded with them. Don’t chance anything, Rynn.”

I nodded, slipping my gun in my waistband at my back as I moved toward the door. Once I was halfway out in the hall, I cleared my throat, catching his gaze.

“As for tying me up? Don’t threaten me with a fun time.” I shot him a devious grin. “You can tie me up whenever you want as long as I get an orgasm.”

Spinning around, I rushed down the hall, hearing him yell my name. A giggle escaped me as I got into the elevator. Whatever this was between Gage and me had grown even more since we’d had sex, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. I liked him. There was no doubt about that. But I couldn’t give him what he wanted—I couldn’t be his completely. I fucking wished I could. Because the other two guys plaguing my mind had no damn business being there.

But until my feelings for them disappeared, this was how it was going to be. It wasn’t fair to Gage to make promises I couldn’t keep. I’d told him the truth about liking him, but I worried it would break him if I admitted he wasn’t the only one who made my heart race. Who made my stomach flutter. It was so damn wrong, since Jace and Kian were the enemies. It would never fucking work with either of them.

They were at this hotel, interfering with the biggest job so far this year, and it could all crumble if they realized what I was doing. A part of me wanted them far away. Yet there was another part that was excited to see them, and I couldn’t swallow it, no matter how hard I tried.

“Fuck me,” I muttered under my breath as I stepped off the elevator. Feelings were a bitch.

I wandered through the lobby, ignoring the lone man sitting on the couch, blatantly checking me out even though I was wearing clothes that practically swallowed me. Gage’s hoodie nearly went to my knees. Once I got to the long hall, I slowed down, searching for any movement. The ballroom was farther down once the hall split two ways. My pulse thudded when Kian came into view about halfway there. He was leaning against the wall, his head turned away from me.

My eyes darted to a bathroom door, and I quickly pushed the door open and went halfway inside before turning around to head back into the hall. I purposefully kicked the door, making a loud thudding noise. Without glancing back, I made my way back to the lobby. Since Jace and Kian were sneaking around, I was sure they’d heard it, and I was more than positive they recognized me and were following.

Once the room opened up into the lobby, I stopped in my tracks when a guy got in my way. My eyes turned cold when I realized it was the same one who had been checking me out not even two minutes prior. He shot me a grin, stepping in my way again when I attempted to move around him.

“Hi, sweetheart,” he drawled, running a hand through his slicked back black hair. “Looks like you could use some company.”

“Sorry, I’m not attracted to assholes.” I paused, thinking of the two guys who were no doubt seconds behind me. “Actually, I think I am. But you still don’t have a chance. Get the hell out of my way.”

I wasn’t worried about playing nice. James wouldn’t want a guy like this in his hotel. He’d kick him out for harassing women anyway. The guy’s dazzling smile faded at my response, and he got in my face.

“Don’t be a bitch,” he hissed, keeping his voice low. “I was being nice.”

“And that’s why nice guys are worse,” I stated. “At least assholes are up front about it. Now move out of my fucking way.”

He reached for me, and I swung my knee into his groin, making him fall to his knees with a groan. I rushed forward, heading out of the front revolving door. The cool night air shook some clarity into me. As fun as it would be to play around with Kian and Jace, I needed them to get out of this hotel. I couldn’t mess this up for Ellie.
