“Then leave,” I snapped.

“And take her with you. She’s mean,” Indy said and laughed.

“You guys all suck, you know that?”

“He just needs time, Trista,” Memphis said.

“How much time?” I asked. “Because I think I’m losing my mind.”

“Trista Whisperer, can you do something about this?” Indy asked and waved his hand in my direction.

“Oh, fuck off.”

Utah laughed and pulled out the chair between himself and Indy before he motioned for me to sit between them.

“Come on,” Memphis said. “Bitch it out so we can all move on.”

I glanced into the living room on my way around the island to sit between the boys to make sure Jersey was still asleep on the couch.

“He hasn’t even kissed me,” I whispered, like Jersey might spring to life if I said the words too loudly.

“That’s what you’re upset about?” Indy asked and laughed.

“Guys, the man literally fucked me with no regard for protection the first time. Didn’t even bother to ask about birth control or condoms,” I said. “But he’s been back here for like two weeks now and he hasn’t even kissed me?”

“In his defense,” Memphis said. “He already knew you had an IUD.”

“What? Why do you know I have an IUD?”

“And how in any fucking realm is that in his defense?” Utah added.

“Those clinics you went to all the time on your cross country tour might have been free, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t keep records,” Memphis said and laughed.

“All the time?” Indy repeated and laughed. “What exactly were you doing out there in the wild?”

“Why in God’s name were you looking to find out if I was on birth control?” I asked.

“I wasn’t,” she said. “I was just trying to find you. Those clinics were really the only common places you visited from state to state. It was the easiest way to pick up on a trail. I pulled all their documents that were about you. Jersey is thorough so he went through everything that I found too.”

“What a hilarious invasion of privacy,” I mumbled. “How were all of you just okay with that job?”

“We’re all bad people,” Jersey said from the doorway behind us.

“It lives,” Utah mumbled while my face turned bright red.

“Hey,” Indy chimed in to Jersey. “Can you do me a favor?”

“Probably not,” Jersey said and shifted toward the coffee pot on the other side of the kitchen.

“Can you just come over here and kiss this girl so we can get on with life around here?” Indy asked. Memphis spit her own coffee out on the countertop because she couldn’t stifle the laugh, Indy slapped me on the shoulder, and Utah stood up to clear the area.

“Yep,” Utah said. “That’s where I draw that line. I’m out. See y’all later tonight.”

“I thought we were friends,” I whispered to Indy.

“We are. And you’re welcome.”

Jersey was standing across the island from me by the time I’d managed to look back in his direction, arms spread wide with his palms flat on the countertop on either side of him.
