“Not a chance, sweetheart. No one is supposed to be down here. The only reason I am is because I was hoping to tease you some more. And Bennett probably only wanted a quiet place to talk on the phone.”

Swallowing hard, I peeked into the conference room again. Bennett was off the phone now, scrubbing his face roughly. His shoulders were up and tense and he really did look upset. I shot a worried look at Luka.

“I’ll keep a lookout. You go comfort our boy.”

Slowly, I dipped my chin. I could do that. I could comfort him. I didn’t necessarily need to do anything crazy. I wasn’t even sure he’d be into that. Bennett wasn’t Luka.

Drawing in a deep breath, I bolstered my nerves and slipped into the room. Bennett didn’t even notice me while I put my things down on the table and came to stand in front of him. It wasn’t until I put my hand on his shoulder that he looked up, surprised.

“Julie! Sorry, I didn’t hear you come in.”

“Are you okay?”

He tried to force a smile, but all that came out was a grimace. “I’m okay. Just family stuff. If you need to set up, I can get out of your way.”

He moved to stand, and I had to put my hands on his shoulders and push to get him to sit back down. I shook my head, running my fingers through his hair.

“That’s okay. I came in here because I was worried about you. You don’t have to rush off.”

He sighed, leaning forward to rest his head against my stomach. I curled myself around him, cuddling him. Normally I’d be worried about getting caught, but with Luka watching out, I could focus on helping Bennett without worrying about someone walking in.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” I murmured.

He shook his head. “Not really.”

I tried not to feel hurt about his refusal to open up. My job wasn’t to open up old wounds, it was to make him feel better. I ran my nails through the hair on the back of his head, and I snickered when he shuddered and reached up to stop me.

“You keep doing that and I’m gonna think you came in here for a different reason.”

I chewed on my lip. “Would that really be so bad?”

Bennett stiffened, and he sat back slowly, searching my face with a deep frown. “What do you mean?”

I lifted a shoulder. “I mean, if there’s something I can do that would make you feel better…”

My face burned at the suggestion, but Luka’s sultry words rang in my ear and I could almost feel him watching us. And I wanted the distraction to ease the sting a little from Bennett’s refusal to let me in. To remind myself that he still wanted me. I glanced towards the door, but it was shut tight and I didn’t see any shadows passing underneath.

“Julie…” Bennett’s voice was strained and when I looked down at him, I caught sight of his erection. Heat flooded my veins, and I stepped closer so that I was standing between his legs. When I sank to my knees, his breath caught, and he stared at me wide-eyed. I licked my lips, suddenly nervous.

“Did you want me to help you feel better?”

His face was a cross between disbelief and lust, a fire burning in his eyes that I was starting to recognize. It was the look he gave me whenever he wanted to touch me, but we weren’t in a place where he could freely. Like when he took me to dinner on his night. He gave me that heated look all through the meal, making me squirm until we got back to my place and attacked each other.

“Let me help you, Bennett,” I whispered.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

JULIE

I honestly don’t know what came over me. It almost felt like Luka was some kind of magician, that spell that he weaved around me earlier in the copy room making me feel hot and a little reckless to where I was willing to do something crazy just to enjoy it a little more. I wasn’t going to do anything if Bennett didn’t agree, though, so I waited, nibbling my lower lip as I stared up at him.

His gaze darted to the door, and back to me, and he groaned low. “We’ll get caught,” he murmured, his voice tight with need.

I licked my lips, shifting back until I was under the table. It was an extra layer of protection in case Luka got pulled away and couldn’t cover for us. Bennett’s breathing picked up, and he moved closer, a hint of desperation taking over his features.

“You sure?”

I nodded quickly. “I want to make you feel good.”
