How could she have given them her heart in less than a week? Because they were exactly the kind of men she’d been looking for. Only one major problem kept her from staying.

Pulling out of the gate, she didn’t look back. It was time to look forward and keep her eyes on the road, though she felt like the car was dragging her heart along the road.

When she reached San Antonio, she returned the rental car and caught the red-eye to New York. Looking down at her phone, she turned it off, hoping they didn’t have her cell phone number.

She needed a chance to heal. A chance to get over the feelings that had her heart breaking. As the flight took off, a tear slipped down her cheek as they flew over the early morning lights of the city of San Antonio.

She was leaving a piece of her heart behind and she turned her face to the window, knowing that her next stop would be back to her old life.

Time to put this week behind her. Time to forget about the two handsome cowboys who had given her a taste of paradise.

CHAPTER12

Luis drove like a crazy man from his parents’ house to the ranch, breaking speed limits and taking chances. Hurrying to get back and praying that his mother was wrong.

When Luis pulled his truck up into the drive, he saw her rental car was gone. They hadn’t moved it since that first night. His chest tightened at the sight of the empty drive.

Slamming his fist against the steering wheel, he screamed. What had he done?

Why in the hell could his mother be so right and know what Stacy was feeling? She was a woman that’s why. A brilliant woman who knew how to read people. Who understood a woman’s need. And he’d fucked up today in the worst possible way.

Jumping out of the truck, he ran into the house, slamming the door behind him.

“Stacy,” he yelled, hoping she was still here, knowing instinctively that she was gone. Silence filled the house except for his labored breathing and the sound of his boots on the wood floors.

“Stacy,” he screamed again.

Running up the stairs, he entered the bedroom and saw that her suitcase was gone. The last butt plug lay on the desk along with a note.

A searing pain, the agony of loss, struck him in the chest. The last time he’d experienced this was when John was killed. His hands shook as he picked up the letter from Stacy.

Dear Luis and Trevor,

Thank you for such a wonderful week. I wish we could have completed the final act, but I need to go home. Though we made a promise there would be no commitments this week, after five days, my heart was getting involved. And I can’t give up my dreams even for you, Luis.

You two were the best men I’ve ever had the pleasure of being with, and to keep my promise, I knew I had to return home. Having a family is a dream I’ve had for years and I’ll never give it up. When Luis mentioned he would never marry or have children, I knew that would crush me and so I made the decision to leave before I fell in love with the two of you even more.

Yes, I was falling in love with both of you, even though it’s been less than a week.

Again, thank you for the best week of my life. I’ll always have a special place for the two of you in my heart. Please don’t call me or come after me. I need this time to heal. Luis doesn’t want to marry or have a family and I want that more than anything.

I wish you both the very best.

Stacy

Stunned, Luis read the note and sighed. He’d fucked things up royally and yet he still had misgivings. What if love didn’t heal him? What if he remained this way for the rest of his life?

What if his nightmares grew worse?

Stacy had been wonderful when he had the one episode, but to deal with that on a regular basis, she would soon grow weary and think him broken. And he never wanted to be considered beyond help.

The bedroom door opened and Trevor walked in.

“Her car’s gone,” he said. “Did she leave?”

Luis handed him the note, his heart heavy.

With a sigh, Trevor sank down on the bed and Luis could see he was angry.
