Page 46 of Never Letting Go

“It gets the attention off you!”

“Nobody thought I had anything to do with Mateo’s death until you brought up the ridiculous notion.” Grayson stepped closer to Trey.

“Keep that knife away from me!”

Damon leaped around to stand between them. “Let’s find a place to put the evidence, and let the authorities figure out what’s going on with it.”

“I’m all for that.” Grayson looked around. “But where are we going to put it?”

“There has to be a plastic bag somewhere.”

Several people got up and looked around.

Damon scanned the room, not seeing anything. “We should go to the front desk. They’ll know where to find one.”

“Good idea.” Grayson turned to Trey. “Stay away from me.”

“Youstay away fromme!”

“I couldn’t be happier about my decision not to have you in the wedding party.” Grayson rushed past him and out the door.

Trey’s face reddened, and he shook his fist at Grayson. “I never wanted to be in your stupid wedding in the first place!”

Damon studied him as he hurried past. He caught up with Grayson, then together they headed toward the front desk.

“Is Trey mad about not being a groomsman?” Damon asked.

“He’s always been jealous of Mateo, Javi, and me. As you can tell, he has a mouth on him, andthat’swhy we preferred not to be around him. Although he’ll tell you it’s because we think we’re better than everyone else.”

“Did he ask about being in the wedding? I’m trying to figure out why he’d be so adamant about your supposed guilt.”

“Like I said, he’s always been jealous.”

“But even so, that’s a huge jump to accusing you of murder.”

Grayson shrugged.

“Has he done this before?”

“Accused me of killing someone? No. But he’s thrown plenty of accusations my way over the years. He sees me as the leader of the trio, and he said multiple times if I accepted him, so would the others. However, it’s never been about acceptance. He’s our cousin. We all stick up for family no matter what, but we haven’t ever trusted him.”

“Why not?”

Grayson sighed. “His flair for dramatics didn’t start tonight. He’s been like that for as long as I can remember. The fact that Mateo is dead only fuels Trey’s need for theatrics.”

They reached the front desk, but it was empty.

“Isn’t someone supposed to be here at all times?” Damon asked.

“That’s what I was told, but tonight is hardly typical.”

Damon went around to the other side of the desk and rifled through drawers. “Help me look for a plastic bag.”

“Right.” Grayson rubbed his eyes then joined Damon.

All they found were papers and a big envelope.

“What do we do now?” Grayson asked. “We can take it up to my suite and set it somewhere out of the way. Do we really need a bag? We’re already being careful not to get any prints on it.”
