Page 51 of Never Letting Go

“And we still don’t know who killed Mateo.”

He shook his head. “Let’s get to our room — and this time we stick together.”

“Even if we find Rita’s grandma?”

“Even if we find the president.” He grabbed her hand then led her to the elevators.

Closed. Apparently they didn’t work with the generator.

“Where are the nearest stairs?”

Damon pulled out a soggy piece of paper from his pants. It dripped onto the floor as he tried to carefully unfold it, but it still ripped in half. Not that it mattered. All the ink had run together.

He dropped it into the nearest garbage can. “This map is useless. We’ll have to look for the stairs.”

“I think there are some near the ballroom.”

“Hopefully we can find some closer.”

“Anything would do at this point.” Her dress now felt twice as heavy with all the rainwater it had absorbed.

Slosh, slosh.

“Your shoes are loud,” she said.

“I should’ve emptied the water outside, but I was more worried about getting us out of the weather.”

“Luckily there isn’t a killer hiding in the shadows.”

He grimaced, stopped, and took off the shoes. They started walking again, and when they passed a trash can, he dumped them out.

Ariana started to say something, but Bella ran out from another hallway, looking behind her. Her hair was halfway undone, and she was only wearing one shoe. She turned to Ari and Damon, her eyes wild. “Someone just attacked me!”

“Where?” Damon demanded.

Bella pointed down the hall. “That way!”

He took off running.

So much for sticking together. Ariana hurried after him.

“You’re going to leave me alone?” Bella called.

Ari skidded to a stop and turned around. “Come with me.”

“I’m not going back to that madman!”

“Who was it?” Her heart hammered at the thought of finding out who it was.

“I didn’t see him.” Bella pulled some hair behind her ears.

Disappointment washed through her. “I can’t leave Damon to face him alone.”

“You can’t leave me either!”

“Then come with me!”

Bella looked at her like she was crazy. “He attacked me!”
