Page 50 of Never Letting Go

Many of the vehicles had their tires slashed. Damon’s car wasn’t in the parking lot. He motioned for her to follow him toward the entrance. When he stopped suddenly, she crashed into him.

He aimed the light toward the path leading to the woods. Not far in, a large tree blocked the road. Farther beyond, another one sprawled across the way.

It could be like that for the entire miles-long road leading back to civilization. Given the strong winds, that was likely the scenario.

A cold chill ran through her that had nothing to do with the weather.

The police couldn’t get in.

And they couldn’t get out.

They were trapped, cut off from help, and almost anyone inside could be the killer.

ChapterTwenty-Four

To my one and only,

If I didn’t have your attention before, I should now. You’d think, anyway. But no. Have you paid me even a little attention since the murder?

Don’t you realize that’s the one thing that could put a stop to all of this? The only person I care about is you. Nobody else matters.

They’re all fair game if you don’t realize we’re meant to be together. We will be, even if it means I have to kill everyone here. Not that I want to. Of course I don’t. What kind of a monster would enjoy that?

This is about getting your attention. Nothing more.

I’ll do whatever it takes. That should be obvious by now. But if it isn’t, it will be soon enough. I promise you that much.

Call off the wedding. If you don’t, someone else will be the next victim.

You don’t want that. None of us does.

All my love,

Your one and only

(Even though you don’t realize it yet. Don’t let it take us being the only two left. Open your eyes.)

ChapterTwenty-Five

Astrong gust of wind knocked Ariana against Damon. She steadied herself and focused on the massive building in front of them. They were almost there.

The sky lit up. Thunder boomed almost immediately. It was so loud, it shook through her.

Damon reached the door then motioned for her to go in first.

She practically fell inside the lobby. Water dripped from her, making a puddle on the fancy flooring. Damon slammed the door, gasping for air and adding to the puddle.

“We need a new plan,” she said, also out of breath.

“The first thing we need to do is change out of these clothes.”

Ari could hardly argue with that. “What next?”

He turned to the still empty front desk. “We need to let someone on staff know what’s going on. As soon as the storm lets up, it’s going to take a whole crew of people to clear the road.”

“I’m sure my dad and police will be on that.”

“Even so, it’ll take hours if there are as many downed trees as I think.”
