“You can’t.” Bella sniffled. “You’re pregnant.”

“I’m not going to sit around and do nothing!”

“What do you want to do?” Ari asked.

Rita paced the same path her future father-in-law had just moments earlier. “Anything! My fiancé is out there, and he’s not in a good place. One of his best friends was just murdered. He won’t be thinking clearly.”

“The best thing you can do is to stay in here and don’t let anyone in.”

“Because I’m pregnant?”

“Exactly.”

Rita crossed her arms. “I hate being helpless.”

“You’re not — you’re protecting your baby. Let us take care of this.”

Bella’s eyes widened, and she leaped out of the bed. “By ‘us’ do you mean you andme? I’m not going anywhere!”

Ariana wracked her mind for ideas. She might have to head back out into the main part of the hotel on her own again, unless she could think of something else.

“We know it’s Trey,” Rita said. “What we need is a plan to trap him.”

“Itmightbe him,” Bella said. “Just because he was accusing Grayson doesn’t mean heisthe killer.”

“Why else would he accuse an innocent man?”

“Because he’s upset about his cousin’s death.”

“I’m with Rita,” Ariana said. “Trey didn’t just accuse him, he planted a fake bloody knife under Grayson’s chair. At least someone did. The only one who makes sense is him.”

They both looked at her in surprise.

“You could’ve led with that,” Rita said.

“It’s hard to keep everything straight. You have to admit this is all one big mess.”

“You don’t have to tell me. What are we going to do?”

Ariana considered their options. “Bella and I should find whoever we can, and from there we can question Trey.”

“What good will that do?” Rita asked. “He’ll just accuse Grayson. Obviously he’s out to get him.”

“With a group of people, we can stop him.”

“It’s a bad idea,” Bella said quickly. “He’s already killed once. What’s stopping him from killing again? The fact that he went after me is enough to tell me one murder wasn’t enough for him. And I’m not about to face him again.”

Rita wrapped her arms around Bella. “You’re not taking my baby sister.”

Ariana hesitated. She’d promised Damon she wouldn’t go out alone, but what other choice did she have?

“Think about it,” Rita said. “Youteachwomen self-defense. If anyone can do this, it’s you.”

“I also teach them not to be stupid and go into dangerous situations on purpose. Especially alone.”

“Don’t you have a gun?” Rita asked.

Ariana gestured to her currently skin-tight dress. “Does itlooklike I have a weapon on me?”
