Chapter 11

He wants us to meet his parents? My brain goes haywire, shooting various questions and ideas at me.What if they hate me or dislike the fact that I have a daughter? It could be the end of us.

Old memories flash through my brain, and my heart palpitates with the speed of someone that has drunk over ten cups of strong espresso. My throat is drier than the Sahara desert. As I bring the glass to my dehydrated lips, a slosh of water lands on my lap. My hands are shaking.

How can something so silly affect me this much?

A calming, warm scent of wood and amber fills my nose, and I twist my head to find its source. My attention falls on moving lips, and I try to make sense of what they say, but it's barely audible. My ears ring and I place my hand on my tight chest. God, what is happening to me? A tingling sensation rapidly spreads through my body, and seconds later, everything around me spins out of control, followed by darkness.

"Emma, sweetheart, open your eyes."

Nick? Why does his voice sound so worried?

"What is wrong with my mommy?"

Hearing my sweet daughter's voice brings me back from wherever I have been.

"Don't worry, sweetheart. Your mom will be fine. She got dizzy and needed to lie down for a moment,” a woman's voice explains. When I open my eyes, they meet Nick's. Why am I lying with my head in his lap?

"Why don't we get your mommy a donut, sweety?" the woman's voice says, and with that, two sets of footsteps retreat.

I gaze up at Nick, and his eyes are tender. His thumb caresses my cheek. "Hey there.”

"What happened?" I ask.

"You had a panic attack, Angel."

"What?" I try to recall what happened before the darkness, and when I do, I lift my hands in front of my eyes and close them. "God, I'm sorry."

"Don't be," he says as his hands keep caressing my hair. "Show me those angelic eyes of yours."

I remove my hands and gaze into his brown irises. "It's okay."

"Did Charlotte see me having that panic attack?"

"No, she came running in seconds before you woke up."

"Thank God," I say while releasing an enormous sigh. I rub my hands over my face a few times.

"Do you think you can sit up?"

I nod as I lift myself back in a seating position. Nick places his hands on my back and moves them in circular motions. Running footsteps coming our way get my attention.

"Mommy? Are you okay?"

I twist my head, and the sight of Charlotte biting her bottom lip gets to me. My little girl walks to the left side and sits next to me.I give her a reassuring smile. "I'm fine, sweetheart."

As I peek down and she glances up, tears whirl in her beautiful eyes.

"I thought—" Her chin trembles as she tries to speak. "You were white, and you were lying still when I came over."

The fear in her gaze shows me what was going through my little girl's head. I place her on my lap and let my fingers brush over her head and hair.

"Sweetheart, I'm sorry I scared you, but I got dizzy and fainted for a moment."

She tilts her head as she inspects my face. "Why did you faint, Mommy?"

Nick answers. "Hey, Smarty, have you ever had so much fun that you forgot that you had to eat?"
