“I see.”

“You know what I’m talking about, don’t you?”

“Possibly.”

“So anyway, we went for coffee, we got talking, and he said it wasn’t a chain, it was—”

“A collar.”

Silence for a moment, followed by a sigh. “So you do know.”

“Yeah. Did he say who gave him the collar?”

“Yes. Taylor, a guy he’s been seeing for the past year. Jem says he’s going to bring him to the house to meet me and Hugh.”

Sol blinked. “Did you know he was gay?”

“Not until that moment, no. Have to say, it was a lot to take in over two cups of coffee and a Danish. I get the impression it was a big deal to tell me about the collar, but Jem and me, we’ve always been able to talk about anything—except the fact he’s gay, it seems. But my point is, you don’t have to sugarcoat stuff, okay? I’m a big girl now. I can deal with it.”

Sol was trying to deal with the revelation that his favorite nephew was both gay and a submissive, and that kink might really be in the genes.

“Jem did ask me not to mention it to Mom and Dad,” she added.

“Yeah, I can understand that.” All they knew about BDSM was what they saw in the media, and that wasnota good thing.

“But I did tell him he could talk to you. I figured you wouldn’t mind.”

The way Sol saw it, Thanksgiving was looking more and more interesting.

“Is he going to bring his… boyfriend to Thanksgiving dinner?”

“He says he’ll ask Taylor.” She chuckled. “Aren’t you glad you agreed to come?”

“Yes. Happy now?”

“And about your… dilemma. Let me know what you decide to do.”

Sol was going to do what he’d promised Toby—he was going to think about it. Except he knew from past experience that if he thought about it for too long, he’d find a way to talk himself out of it.

He gazed at Butch’s image before clicking on the other window. The date was still there.

Butch gets to see that every day. A constant reminder.

Sol could understand why he’d had it done in the first place—maybe—butdamn it, that wasn’t healthy.

I can’t let him dwell on the past. I have to help him move on. Like I did.

And just like that, he’d reached a decision. Sol clicked on his email and hitCompose.

Looks like Alli nailed it with her second level.

Sol stared at Liam’s photo. “I’m deluding myself, aren’t I? It’s option three all the way, no matter how I dress it up.”

He knew what lay at the root of his decision.

I don’t want Butch hurting anymore.
