McKenzie sounded smug as hell, “That one is my old man, Bronco.”

Echo looked at McKenzie who has a classy pin-up retro vibe going on and then at Bronco who is all biker badass. Echo starts to nod slowly. “Lucky girl,” she mutters which has all of us laughing.

“Penance needed to finish up a few things at work, but he should be here soon,” I answer her earlier question.

“There is no way Penance is yours,” a snide voice comes from behind me.

I turn and notice one of the hang arounds standing there with a beer in one hand and a pinched expression on her face which makes her look constipated and pissed about it. It’s not a good look at all, but it’s one I recognize. This is someone who wanted my man and couldn’t have him. Now she’s all bent out of shape about it, and she thinks she’s better than me for some reason.

“Well, he is,” I tell her and go to turn back around.

“There is no way. He’s not into anyone. He avoids all the women around here,” she seethes, and it almost makes me smile.

I stand up, no longer liking her hovering over me, and face her. When she looks me over, it’s clear that she doesn’t think very much of me. There was a time when that would have bothered me, but I don’t give a single fuck.

“Yeah,” she scoffs, “there’s no way he’s into you.”

Lennon shakes her head, a look of resignation on her face, “Girl, you’re making a mistake right now.”

The hang around chick curls her lip at Lennon and huffs, “Like you know anything.”

Lennon holds up her hands in surrender, but I can see the fire in her eyes. “I’m just trying to warn you that if you’re not careful you’re going to find yourself tossed out of this clubhouse on your ass.”

The woman looks at McKenzie and points out, “I’m just saying she has a property cut on, but not this one.” She makes a dismissive hand gesture in my direction.

Echo’s eyes are big and round as she sucks the last of her margarita down with her straw, her eyes bouncing back and forth like this is the best show she’s ever seen.

I sigh, “Look, here’s the thing. You’ve probably tried to hit on my man before and he turned you down. I can see how it would be a blow to your ego, so I’m going to give you the chance to just walk away now before you really embarrass yourself.”

“He’s not even here right now,” she tries to defend herself and just sounds whiney and sad.

“But his brothers are, and they will back up my words.” I shrug and sit back down, giving her my back because I know the whole interaction is being watched and I’m not worried. “It’s your choice what you do from here, but I’m done with this conversation.”

The next thing I feel is a large, warm, and comforting hand land on my shoulder. I look up to find Bennett looking down at me with a smile on his face. Then his lips meet mine and I’m lost in kissing him. Just like I am every other time it happens.

CHAPTER 12

PENANCE

It’s been a fucking day. A long fucking day, but successful as well. Maybe. Kind of. I had a meeting with Volkov and his closest men again about the possibility of someone associated with Morozov being involved in Sam’s death. It might be the only thing that makes sense, but they haven’t heard anything from their sources about the lingering cockroaches from Morozov’s organization making that kind of play.

It got me thinking about why they would come after us and not Volkov directly. Sure, Volkov uses our security firm for certain things, but those close to him are his own men and we aren’t the only security option in the city. Hitting us wouldn’t leave Volkov or anyone close to him unprotected.

Some of the guys under me also finally got through all the footage from the surrounding businesses. They found some video of a vehicle that might have been the one to drop Sam’s body at our doorstep. We can’t find a connection between it and Morozov’s people.

It felt like I was going around in circles, but it also felt like those circles were leading me farther away from a Morozov connection. Which means I spent time today making a list of anyone else it could be.

We might not deal in illegal shit, but we aren’t choir boys. My brothers get in fights, we hold our territory in a tight hold and there are things we don’t allow on our turf, and we don’t play nice when we don’t want or need to.

We’ve made some enemies over the years and those are only the years I’ve been around. With how long the club has been standing, there might be some long running bad blood I have no idea about.

It’s something I want to talk over in church with the rest of the brothers.

It feels like I’ve been itching to get home to my woman for hours. I know she’s been excited about spending time with McKenzie, Lennon, and another one of her friends who she invited out to the clubhouse, but all I want to do is take her away from all the noise and my brothers and hold her. Maybe she’ll let me have a few minutes and then we can rejoin the party.

I shake my head as I dismount my bike. I’m so fucking gone for this girl that she has me thinking about cuddling instead of downing a beer with my family. It’s wild, but it also makes me feel damn good.

It’s only been a week, but it’s become very clear to me I was right about Evelyn from the very beginning. She’s mine and everything I’ve ever wanted in a woman. I can’t wait until I can slip my property cut on her.
