“Your history doesn’t back you up.”

Kordo said nothing.

“Do not come back until I give you the okay. Understand?”

“Yeah, yeah. I understand.”

Teddy spent the morning searching hotel parking lots for the car that had followed him the evening after Rebecca’s kidnapping. If he was right, it had been driven by eitherKordo or the broad-faced man. By the time Rivera called him, he was already halfway across town.

He raced toward the set but was still a mile away when Rivera called again.

“He just left. I think he got spooked. But I have a man following him.”

“Can you conference him in?”

A couple of moments later, Hansen joined the call.

“Where are you?” Teddy asked.

“On the 101 freeway, southbound.”

“Does he know you’re following him?”

“From the way he’s driving, I’m pretty sure he does.”

That was unfortunate, but they couldn’t do anything about it now. “Keep me posted on any changes. I’m heading your way.”

Kordo sped south on the freeway, out of Santa Barbara and past Montecito and Summerland. He’d been hoping to lose his tail in the traffic, but the other driver knew what he was doing.

Kordo needed to try something different.

He spotted a sign for an upcoming exit to a town called Carpinteria. Hopefully, it would be big enough to get lost in. He waited until the last moment, then flew across the lanes and raced down the exit ramp.

When he looked into his rearview mirror, he saw that the other car was still behind him.

“Dammit.”

He rolled through the stop at the bottom of the ramp, turned right, and gunned the engine.

The town didn’t appear to be as large as Santa Barbara but looked big enough for his purposes.

He drove into a residential area and began taking random turns.

The guy behind him was good, but not good enough. After several minutes, Kordo was finally free of him.

???

Teddy took the Carpinteria off-ramp and called Hansen.

“Update?”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Barnett. I lost him about a minute ago.”

“Where?”
