Teddy almost didn’t hear the ringing over the sound of the wind whipping by the Porsche. He shot a glance at the radio, wondering if he’d left the volume on low, but it was off.
When he heard a second ring, he realized it was coming from his jacket, which was lying on the passenger seat. His own phone was in a mount on the dashandon vibrate. The ringing had to be coming from the phone he’d taken from Kordo’s car.
He retrieved the dead man’s cell as it began ringing a third time. On the screen, the caller ID read:NUMBER BLOCKED.
Teddy’s thumb hovered over theacceptbutton for asecond before he pulled away. Whoever was on the other end was likely one of Kordo’s associates. Better if they remained unaware that someone else had their friend’s phone, and, of course, that their friend was dead.
The mobile rang two more times before the screen went dark.
Teddy waited for the caller to try again, but the phone remained silent.
He stuck a wireless earbud into one ear and used his own phone to call Kevin.
The hacker answered with a yawned, “Morning.”
“Check your clock. Where you are, it’s already nighttime.”
Teddy heard Kevin moving around on the other end.
“Huh. You’re right.”
“I usually am.”
“So I’ve noticed.”
“As much as I enjoy listening to you compliment me, there’s something I’m hoping you can help me with.”
“Color me surprised. What’s up?”
“I have a phone I need unlocked.”
“Since you’re calling me on yours, I assume it belongs to someone else.”
“Your grasp of logic continues to amaze me.”
“All part of the services I provide. Do you know the number of the locked phone?”
“Unfortunately, no.”
“Do you at least know where it is?”
“Sitting on the seat beside me.”
“That I can work with. Is your Bluetooth on?”
“Yes.”
“Give me a moment.” After several seconds of silence, Kevin said, “I’m not in yet, but I’m connected to it. This might take a couple minutes.”
“But youcanget in, right?”
“Are you purposely trying to insult me?”
“Not this time.”
“Stop talking and let me concentrate.”
