Over the next several minutes, the only signs that Kevin was still on the line was the occasional frustrated grunt.

Teddy soon reached the Santa Barbara city limits and then took the exit closest to the Novaks’ estate.

After getting off the freeway, he’d only driven a few blocks away when Kevin said, “I’m in. Changing the screen lock code to 1-2-3-4. And... done.”

“Can you do me a favor and check the call logs?”

“Why do you think I just changed the code? So you could do that yourself.”

“I’m driving. I’d rather not be in another potential car accident today.”

“Another?”

“Not important. Just check the logs.”

“There are twenty-one incoming calls, all listed as ‘number blocked.’ I assume you want me to check the outgoing, too?”

“If you didn’t, I’d be disappointed.”

“And we’d never want that.” The line went quiet for a moment. “Wow. There’s nothing there at all. The user either never initiated a call or he was diligent at erasing the log.”

“Any way to find out what those blocked numbers are?”

Kevin clicked his tongue against the roof of his mouth several times. “It’s possible, but might take some time.”

“How much time?”

“Not sure. Could be a few hours. Could be a few days.”

“We don’t have a few days. We need to find the phone or phones those numbers belong to. And track them. There’s a very good chance one of them is located where Rebecca Novak is being held.”

“Oh. Got it. I’ll get right on it. But if it’s a cell phone, I may only be able to identify an area.”

“That’s better than what we have now. Let me know as soon as you have something.”

Lunch with Ben was as soul-sucking as Matthew anticipated. Sitting there, across the table from the very man he hated more than anyone else in the world, was almost too much to bear.

Matthew deserved an Oscar for his performance. Hell, he deservedallthe Oscars.

The small talk between him and Ben while they waited for their food to arrive had been so mind numbing, it was a small miracle he hadn’t launched himself across the table and jammed his knife into Ben’s chest.

“I hear you’re in Santa Barbara on vacation,” Ben said.

Matthew nodded.

“From L.A.?”

“Yep.”

“Is that where your family’s from?”

“No. Back east. Near Chicago.” A lie, but as if he’d tell Ben the truth.

“I love Chicago. Any brothers and sisters?”

“Nope, just me.”
