I implored her with my eyes to go along with the act.

She glanced up at Caleb and swallowed. “She’s right. I’m sorry. We’ll be good.”

He traced his hand slowly down the side of Bliss’s face. “It could have been so different, you know. If you’d just learned your place.”

She nodded obediently.

I wanted to vomit at the sight, but it was enough to get Caleb to believe exactly what he wanted to believe.

That he had the power.

And we were just stupid, useless women who didn’t know anything.

The second the door closed behind him, I twisted my legs and got my feet beneath me so I could press up into a standing position. I bent my knees and stuck my ass out between my bound hands, sliding them down the backs of my thighs.

Bliss gaped at me. “I would never be able to do that. My ass would get in the way.”

I grinned at her. “I know I always say I want your curves, but today, my flat, bony ass is coming in handy.” I stepped one foot backward through my arms, and then the other, so my hands were in front of me. I couldn’t do anything about the restraints, but at least I could use my hands. I turned to Bliss. “Come on, pregnant lady. Time to get you up. All you gotta do is get on your feet. We’ll worry about your hands later.”

“Easier said than done with a belly, Rebel!”

“I know. But you gotta do it for Mini-Disney, Bliss. Twist your legs to the side like I did then push while I pull.”

I’d had the advantage of being short and maybe even a little bit fit since Kian kept making me run places. Bliss didn’t have those advantages.

But she was strong in her own way, and that was going to be what got us out of here. I held her upper arms and helped as much as I could, but the urgency was all Bliss needed.

She got up on her feet, arms still behind her back, but with fire in her eyes. “Now what?”

“Now we run.”

I slammed down the door handle, sending up a silent thank you when it wasn’t blocked from the outside. I peered around, not seeing anyone in the darkness.

But in the distance, women screamed.

We both paused at the noise, my blood running cold.

“Those women. We can’t just leave them,” Bliss whispered.

I didn’t want to, but staying here wasn’t the answer either. “We can’t help them until we help ourselves. Run.”

Bliss took a step toward the gates that would lead to the road.

It was the way out. We’d be forced into the bushes at the side of the road to avoid Caleb and his guys, but it might have worked. We might have gotten free and escaped.

But just escaping was no longer an option.

I stopped.

Grabbed her arm. “No. Get my brass knuckles out.”

“What?” But to her credit, she turned around, blindly groping my ass pocket for the weapons I always kept there, even though her hands were still tied behind her back and she couldn’t see what she was doing other than by feel.

When she put them on my fingers, I nearly cried with relief. But it was quickly followed by a wave of sheer determination. “This way.”

Bliss shook her head in panic. “That will lead farther into the construction site.”

“I know. Do you trust me?”
