Her expression turns serious. “What are you sorry for? Don’t apologize.”

“I just didn’t know how to tell you.”

“Well…start from the beginning. Tell me everything,” she says, pulling me to the two chairs in front of her desk.

“Uncle Ronan offered me a job.”

Her eyes widen. “At the club?”

I shake my head back and forth. “Sort of. Notatthe club. Just…for the club.”

“Is that what you want?” she asks, leaning forward.

“Yes. I…need this. I need a change. I hate my job here, but I feel like if I leave you, then it’s like I’m not grateful for everything—”

“Jack, stop,” she says, putting a hand up. Then she places her hands on either side of my face. “My sweet Jack. I did not give you this life so I could keep you here with me. I gave you this life so you’d be free to live it however you want. Once upon a time, I felt stuck in my home, and getting out was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

My eyes cast downward as I let the relief of exposing this secret wash over me.

She touches my chin, lifting my face until I’m staring into her eyes again. “I will miss you like crazy, and I’m going to visit alot. But you were never meant to live by someone else’s rules. You were meant for big things, my sweet boy. And I would never want to be the one to stop you.”

“Thanks, Mama,” I whisper as my voice cracks.

She pulls me into another tight embrace, and I try to absorb some of her courage and confidence. My mother is the strongest person I know, and I’m going to need some of that for the future I have planned.
