“Can someone fill me in here?” Lila asked, her gaze bouncing back and forth between Skylar and Dyllan.

“What did I miss?” Zach asked, walking up to the table with plates of food balanced on his arms.

“Skylar here was just filling us in on how she knows Grumpy Bear.” Travis chuckled.

“I swear to God, the next person who calls me that is getting an ass-kicking,” Dyllan grumbled, shooting a death glare at his friends at the table.

“Language,” Skylar hissed. “Why are you so insistent on being so vulgar, especially in public?”

“You consider ass vulgar? Oh, honey. You haven’t seen nothing yet,” sarcasm laced through his low tone as he took a step toward her. “Maybe you’ve been sheltered in your little city condo, but Logan Creek isn’t anywhere near the same as your high-rise city.”

“Okay, seriously, what’s going on? How do you know Skylar, and why are you so growly?” Lila’s voice rose behind him.

“Doll here decided to stomp her foot and throw a tantrum in a coffee shop earlier today.” Dyllan nodded his head at Skylar as he turned to Lila.

“I did no such thing,” Skylar huffed, clenching her fists at her side as she stomped her foot.

“Much like that.” Dyllan nodded toward her.

“Grumpy Bear here decided to be rude to me and everyone around him because he couldn’t wait his turn.” Skylar placed her clenched fists on her hips, narrowing her eyes at him.

“Watch it with the nicknames, doll,” he growled at her.

“I will when you stop acting like a grump, Grumpy Bear.” She scrunched up her nose at him, and it took everything in his body not to acknowledge how cute she looked while she did it.

“Okay—Dyllan, why don’t you come with me to get the next round?” Zach asked, putting himself in between his warring friends.

Zach placed an arm around Dyllan’s shoulders, leading him away from the blonde, sending him death glares. Reaching the bar, Dyllan turned back around, leaning against it and crossing his arms as she stared down at their table. He didn’t miss the narrow-eyed glances shot in his direction by the spunky newbie at the table.

“Okay, what’s the deal?” Zach asked as he motioned to his bartender for a round.

“No deal.” Dyllan shrugged as he sat on a barstool.

“Bullshit. And that was the exact opposite of being on our best behaviour, by the way.”

“Like I give a shit.” Dyllan avoided Zach’s gaze, instead looking back up at the tv screen, which was now showing a boxing match.

How fitting.

“Come on, man.” Zach ran his hand through his shoulder-length hair. “Give me something here.”

“Fine.” Dyllan sighed as he turned to his friend. “We ran into each other in Hope earlier today. She had a stick up her ass and got on my nerves.”

Zach narrowed his eyes at Dyllan. “There’s more to it than that. It’s not like you to get into arguments with random people, especially out of town.” Zach crossed his arms over his chest as he narrowed his eyes.

Dyllan cocked his head to the side and looked at his friend before slumping his shoulders. “I was on my way home from seeing Deanna.”

“Ah,” Zach replied, leaning back on the bar and mimicking his stance. “How is she doing?”

“Good. Well, as good as she can be.”

“The kids?”

“Adjusting.”

“Look, man…”

“I know what you’re going to say and don’t. I don’t want your sympathy or your advice. You don’t understand.” His voice came out harsh as his back straightened.
