Probably because she was a masochist.

But hearing Beau talk about wanting her was just so…delicious.

“Okay,” he said, “if we can tell each other our hoodies look ratty, we can be honest about this, right?”

She nodded. “Right.”

“If we spend the night in a hotel room together, I’m going to fuck you. And if I do that, it’s going to make it really hard for us to just be friends.”

Heat arrowed through her and she had to take a deep breath. “Have you heard of friends with benefits?”

“That won’t work for us.”

“Why not? We both know the benefits will be great. And we both know that we want to stay friends.”

He stopped moving, but he did not remove his hands from her body. In fact, he seemed to draw her closer. He pinned her with a direct gaze. “Because friends with benefits are for people who like each other butonlywant to fuck.”

She swallowed hard. “And that’s not us?”

“I would want to consume you. I would want to tangle you up in everything I’ve got. I would want to be tangled up in everything of yours. I would absolutely want to tie you down. But I told you, you have to make these decisions on your own. If you decide to stay, you have to stay foryourself. If you decide to leave, you have to be free to do that. You’ve been herefour months. It’s not enough. I can’t sleep with you without wanting everything else and you can’t promise me everything else yet. I won’t believe you.”

She knew she was barely breathing.Intensewas definitely one of the top five adjectives she would use to describe Beau Hebert. Especially when it came to her. But she had not expected this tonight.

“We clear?”

She wet her lips and nodded. Everything he said rang true.

And she appreciated it. He wasn’t wrong. She didthinkshe wanted to stay in Autre, but this was her first year teaching. Her first time out on her own and she wasn’t even actually on her own yet. She was living with her parents. She was working for her dad. And that was more complicated than she’d expected. They’d been in class for six weeks and she was already feeling pressure and disappointment. Did she think things would get better? Sure. The first time doing something was always hard. But damn, shouldn’t cominghomebe one of the easiest things?

Beau was right. Getting involved with him would mean committing to Autre too. For good. All of that at once was probably too much.

“Okay. Fair enough.”

He pulled a breath in through his nose and let it out, almost in relief. “But I could throw you over my shoulder, and carry you out to my truck, and take you home,” he said.

Yeah, they’d come this far. Obviously, she couldn’t go to the room by herself. “You can’t sleep on the floor or something?” she asked.

His heated gaze bore into hers. “No.”

“Oh.” Her heart rate kicked up.

“I could lie to us both,” he said. “I would go up there andintendto. But no, I don’t think I’d spend the night on the floor.”

Damn. He needed to stop. She was feeling very…horny. She was turned on and swept off her feet by his “show” and he’d turned her down for sleeping together, dating, and definitely for anything more. But even pretending had made her heart race, and her skin heat, and her whole body tingle.

Because Beau wanted her.

He didn’t want to want her. He was convinced he couldn’t—shouldn’t—do anything about it. But he wanted her.

And that was, apparently, enough to send her libido into overdrive.

“I, um…need to go upstairs,” she said suddenly, stepping back.

He frowned. “You okay?”

“To…get my stuff,” she said. “I’ll… um, change. And get my stuff. And we can go.”

“You’re ready to go now?”
