He laughed. “Awesome.”

As she got out of the truck and started for her house a few minutes later, she turned back, “Hey.”

He looked over the truck bed. “Yeah?”

“I’d be happy to go along today even if itwasn’tanother set-up.”

His chest squeezed. “I’m glad.”

“And even if Ididhave other friends.”

He gave her a grin. She did have other friends. Things were just a little rough right now. But he said again, “I’m glad.”

“Just wanted you to know that.” Then she pivoted and headed up her mom and dad’s front porch.

And Beau finally felt like he could take a deep breath.

Ten hours straight with Becca.

That was going to be way too much, and far too little, at the same time.

“Yeah, looks like we’re stuck here overnight. He said he couldn’t get the part until tomorrow at the earliest,” Beau told his mom.

“Oh, no. That’s too bad,” Heather said.

Becca covered her mouth with her hand. That was aterribleacting job.

“Yeah. I don’t know what’s going on. The truck’s been running perfectly. But while we were inside looking at the glassware, something happened,” Beau said.

His acting job wasn’t much better. His tone was dripping with sarcasm. His truck had suddenly “broken down” once they’d gotten to Evendale. The truck that had gotten them four hours away from home without so much as a hiccup. The truck he personally maintained. The truck that was now missing some part—she didn’t know truck parts so even though he’d told her, it hadn’t sunk in—that he said could only be missing if someonetook it out.

Seemed a lot like an attic door that would only lock if someone intentionally locked it.

“Well, honey, don’t worry about a thing,” Heather said.

Beau glanced at Becca across the small table in the café where Jack, the mechanic the folks at the glass supply company had recommended, had dropped them. Beau had Heather on a video call, but he still gave Becca an eye roll.

“I mean, we’re a little worried,” Beau said. “We’re stuck here overnight. For at least one night. Where will we stay? What are we going to do?”

As if they both weren’t full-grown adults. Though Evendale was atinytown. They didn’t have a motel or a Target or similar store to pick up toiletries or basic clothes. So it was…inconvenient…that this was where their families had decided to strand them overnight together.

Becauseclearlythat’s what was happening here.

“Well, as luck would have it, I happen to know Maggie. She runs the bed and breakfast there. I’ll just give her a quick call and see if she can put you up for the night. I’m sure she also has extra toiletries, so you won’t have to worry about toothbrushes and things like that.”

Beau actually let his mouth drop open as he stared at Becca.

She just shook her head.

“Well, that really is a convenient coincidence,” Beau said.

Becca stifled a laugh. If Heather didn’t notice her son’s sarcasm, it was because she was choosing to ignore it.

This was actually funny. They were playing along with this quite obvious game of matchmaking and Heatherhadto know that they were on to them.

“And that’s so interesting because Jack mentioned thathehappens to knowLeo,” Beau said.
