“Fox and Lea and then being here just finished me off.”

“Fox will forgive you once he hears the whole story, and Lea… she is stressed and tired. Once today’s over, she will calm down. I’m sure of it.”

I let out a huff. “I don’t think they’ll ever let me in. Not really.” I regretted my words the second I said them because I hated how vulnerable it made me sound. “Not that I care. I mean, if it wasn’t for what happened in New Orleans, I’m sure they would have ended it by now anyway.”

Marshall’s hand shifted, raking through my hair and then pulling hard, tilting my head back, so I was forced to look at him. He was only a couple of inches taller than me, but it felt like he was towering over me. “Don’t do that. Don’t belittle what you guys have. I’d love to have the connection I see between the three of you.”

He stared at my lips, and I wondered if he was about to kiss me. “You could have it,” I whispered, leaning in slightly, my eyes never leaving his. “If you let us in.”

“I have. We’re friends, aren’t we?”

“Friends.” I dusted my fingers across the exposed skin of his chest and rolled my hips, pressing my hard cock against his obvious erection.

He stepped back like I burned him, fastening his shirt buttons back up, and then he flicked his eyes to the door we’d come out of. “If you’re feeling better, we should go.”

He turned and held out his keycard to let us back in, so I wrapped my hand over his. “Marshall, thank you… for being my friend. For seeing me. For saving me tonight.”

He twisted to look at me, and in a moment of tenderness, pushed my hair back from my forehead with his index finger, sending a shiver through my body. “Always. I will always have your back.”

My cock throbbed, and my heart hammered; both of them demanding more of this man… more of his time, his attention, his touch, his ability to dull my sharp edges and make me feel safe to be myself. Fuck, I wanted this man in so many ways and not one of them was as a friend.

Chapter 28

Lea

I’dleftmostofmy team to finish up at the awards, making sure everyone got away without any problems, because the last thing we wanted was carpark gridlock. Climbing into my car, the driver pulled out to take me the three miles to the Gods after party. Hitting the privacy screen, I took off my suit and swapped it for the outfit in the dress bag next to me. Pulling my make up out of my bag, I tried as best I could to touch up my look before pinning my long curly hair up, so I looked like I’d made an effort and not been running around like a headless chicken since 6 am this morning. Then I downed the energy drink I’d stashed in my bag and pushed my feet into a new set of heels, fastening the thin straps around my ankles.

The car came to a stop and a few seconds later, the driver opened my door, holding out his hand to help me out.

“I hope it’s not unprofessional of me to say Lea, but you look stunning.”

I blushed, offering my silver haired driver a smile. “Never, Alfie. I appreciate the compliment.”

Taking the staff entrance into the building, I forced a smile onto my exhausted face and reminded myself that this was what I loved to do.

“Lea, I don’t want you to panic,” Sophia started as soon as I stepped inside the club where we were holding the party.

“Right, so FYI, starting a sentence like that is going to make me panic.”

“We’re five servers short and two from behind the bar.”

“What? Why?”

“The agency wrote down the wrong number when we booked them, despite me double and triple checking.”

“Is that it?”

“And the DJ hasn’t turned up.”

“What?” This time my voice sounded almost strangled. “We can’t have a party without the DJ.” Sweat rolled down my back, and I wished I’d stayed in the car now.

“That it?” I asked apprehensively.

“Yes.”

“Right.” I rolled my hands together as I paced up and down, trying to think of solutions. “Call Mary. She’s still at the Mercury’s. See if she can find us waiting and bar staff willing to work a longer shift. Offer them double time and put them in cabs and get them over here. Make sure they’ve eaten though… I don’t want anyone fainting. Stop at the drive through if they need to.” I looked at my watch. We had an hour before everyone started arriving.

“On it,” Sophia announced, pulling her phone to her ear while I tried to solve our missing DJ problem.
