“Do we have lights and decks?” I asked her, relieved when she nodded and then an idea hit me.

Flicking through the contacts on my phone, I dialed a number, feeling bad that I’d not called in such a long time.

“Oh, my God. She lives. How are you doing, stranger? I presumed you’ve been too busy fucking your beautiful rock star reverse harem to call us mere mortals.”

“Theo. I’ve missed that voice.”

“Not that much. I’ve not spoken to you in almost a year.”

“No,” I cried. “It can’t be that long.”

“Yes, Lea it has. Fuck, woman, you ghosted me.”

“But you know I still love you, right?”

He huffed out a chuckle. “What do you want?”

“You. Your hands. Your mixing talents. I need you to DJ for me.”

“Sweet. I can do that. When?”

“Can you be across London in thirty minutes?”

“Tonight?” he cried. “No. No way. I’m in my sweats, watching an award ceremony an old friend of mine organized. It was pretty epic. She should be very proud of herself.”

“Thank you.”

“Got them all. On their way as we speak,” Sophia whispered. One problem solved.

“Theo. I’m about to host the party of the year for a well-known rock band, and the DJ hasn’t shown. I’m screwed unless you save me. Please. Remember all those times I saved you at school? You owe me.”

Silence.

“I’ll pay you, of course. How does £5k sound?”

“Lea—”

“Fine, £6K. But I need you in a cab on your way here in the next two minutes.”

“Lea, I don’t want more money. That’s not why I paused. Are you asking me to DJ for the Cosmic Gods after party?”

“I can neither confirm nor deny that… and you can’t talk about it on your socials tonight, but tomorrow… you have full bragging rights and you can tell the world where you were.”I heard a scuffling sound and some bangs. “Theo?”

“I’m on my way. I just need to get changed and grab my records. I’ll be there in twenty minutes. And promise me we can catch up. I miss you.”

“Miss you too. Thank you. I owe you big time.”

“You owe me 5K and a hug, then we’re even.”

Hanging up, I turned to Sophia. “DJ sorted. Any other fires we need to put out?”

She shook her head.

“I want to speak to the recruitment company first thing on Monday. They can reimburse us for the additional costs we’ve had to pay out. I also want the DJ’s head on a stick. I mean, who just doesn’t turn up to a gig like this? And can you email the team for tonight—thank them for their hard work but ask them to be in my office at 11am on Monday. I should have known about this the second it became a problem and one of them should have been here to tell me rather than you having to do it. What would I do without you?” I placed my hand on her shoulder. “Now, you’re off duty. Go get changed and have some fun. You’ve earned it.”

“I can hang around, just be safe.”

“No, I’ve got this.”
