“So, are you okay?”

I put the call on speakerphone, knowing the door was closed and none of the crew would come in here now. I placed my phone on the floor and let out a loud sigh. “No.”

“Talk to me.”

“I don’t know where to start.”

She paused. “How about why you sent that text?” Her voice was soft and warm and it made me feel safe to spill my secrets.

“Fox.”

“Is annoying you?”

“I think I’m in love with him.”

“Right.”

“And Lea.”

“Okay. They’re not interested?”

“We’re together.”

“That’s good?” I heard the question in her voice.

“It’s too much.”

“And that’s why you want to quit.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “They get to flaunt their relationship. He came off stage tonight and she couldn’t keep her hands off him. I get ignored.”

“So you’re jealous?”

I wished I could read the tone in people’s voices better. “No. Fuck no. I’m just annoyed.”

“Dawson, sweetie, you’re jealous. Why can’t you kiss them in public?”

“Because I don’t do public displays of affection.”

“Because you don’t want people to know you’re in a non-traditional relationship or because of your diagnosis?”

“I don’t know why I even texted you?” I blurted out.

She laughed. “Because you need a friend. And even though I’m your boss, I’m your friend.” Her voice softened. “Dawson, I’m always here. Have you thought about telling them? Not just Fox and Lea, but the band, the crew?”

“What? Hi, I’m Dawson and I’m autistic, which is why I come across as an unemotional, uncaring asshole who has a regimented need for organization. Oh, and let’s not forget that I crave control in every situation and if I can’t get it, I freak out.”

“Exactly.”

“Nope. Not happening.”

“Because you don’t want people to know?”

“Because I don’t want people to see it as a weakness.”

She let out a sigh. “No one would ever think you’re weak, Dawson.”

“I knew I should never have let you talk me into taking this job.”
