CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Aidan waited for Lilyto answer, but she was just staring at him. His eyes drifted to the older woman standing beside her, and he dropped the macho act.

“Aidan Dufort,” he said, reaching out his hand. “I’m sorry about your husband.”

“Thank you. Angela Peterson,” she said, shaking his hand.

“What are you doing here?” Lily finally asked.

“I think I will just—” Angela thumbed over her shoulder. “Go check on your dad.”

“Okay,” Lily said, not taking her eyes off him.

“Nice to meet you, Aidan.”

“You too, ma’am,” he replied and watched her mother disappear down the hall and into a room, which he assumed was where Lily’s father was.

Emma had told him the man had hours or maybe days left. Which meant Aidan was staying in Chicago for a while because he wasn’t leaving Lily’s side.

Unless she answered in the affirmative.

If she did love Matt, Aidan would need to walk away. He’d assumed Lily was being a compliant employee, answering all his calls and messages in Hawaii. It hadn’t occurred to him she might have feelings for the guy.

Until he had overheard the conversation with her mom.

“She hates being called that,” Lily said. “Ma’am. She thinks it makes her feel old.”

Aidan took a step forward. “Do you know what I hate, Lily?”

Lily shook her head and glanced around them.

“I hate waiting for the answer to an important question.” His voice was rough.

“I can’t believe you’re here.”

Still. Not. Fucking. Answering. Him.

He tugged her down the hall until he found an empty room and then closed them in there.

“What are you doing?” she gasped.
