“She is,” Emma answered her. “I’ll make sure of it.”

No, I will.

“I will. One day. I love children,” Lily admitted.

He didn’t know that.

Did she want to be a mom? How many kids did she want?

Why were there so many people around them so he couldn’t have her to himself and ask her a million questions? And kiss that blush right off her cheeks.

Emma turned as her name was called and tossed down her drink. “That’s my cue. Night, you guys. We’re turning in early.”

Lily and Emma faced each other, their faces breaking out into huge smiles. “Ems! You’re getting married tomorrow.”

“I know. Holy shit.” Emma danced on the spot. “AndI love him. Bonus!”

Aidan grinned.

There was something about seeing a woman love your brother so completely that filled him with a sense of peace. And happiness.

Emma made her way back to her parents, hugging them and saying goodnight.

“What does your dress look like?” Aidan asked Lily when Emma disappeared into the house.

“You’ll just have to wait and see.” She smiled playfully at him. He liked they had a secret and that only he knew about her now fading bruises between her legs.

Well, and Emma. But she hadn’t said anything more than that, as far as he knew.

“You know, you could look at college in Philly,” Blake said, picking back on that conversation.

“There are universities in Chicago she can train at. Isn’t that right Lily?” his father said. Aidan hadn’t noticed him arrive, but the way he refused to look at him gave him pause.

What the hell is he up to?

“Yes, there is,” she answered, glancing quickly at him.

“Do you have a boyfriend back home?” Andrew asked, ignoring her discomfort.

Aidan stiffened.

Even in the flickering light of the tiki torches, he saw Lily’s cheeks turn pink. “No, sir. I do not.”

Andrew rocked on his heels. “I see. Well, I hope you don’t have your sights set on either of these boys.”

Lily’s mouth dropped open.

What in the actual fuck?

Aidan turned to Andrew, anger in his eyes. It was such an ambiguous statement he didn’t know how to react without making a fuss. Something he’d promised himself he wouldn’t do.

But this was crossing the line.

Just as he was about to open his mouth, Lily glanced at him. For a second, all he could see was the shame in her eyes. Then she blinked. In their place, she had erected a rock-solid wall.

A cool chill swept through him.

Lily steeled her shoulders and shook her head. “Absolutely not. I’ll be heading home to Chicago on Monday.”
