“Smart girl. This family is not for everyone,” his father said, pushing the dagger in further.

Mother fucker.

“Hey, w—” Aidan started, then Lily interrupted.

“You know, I think I should retire myself. I’m one of the bridesmaids, after all, and tomorrow will be a big day.”

Lily awkwardly moved her drink around in front of her, looking for a place to put it.

Blake took it.

“Thanks. Um, goodnight,” she said and hurried off.

Jacob and Daniel chose that moment to walk over and join them.

“What did I miss?” Jacob asked, obviously sensing the tension.

“Your uncle being an asshole,” Aidan growled, glaring at his father. “You have some nerve.”

“You’ll thank me one day,” Andrew said, tossed back his whisky and added, “Enjoy your night, boys. I’ll see you in the morning.”

Then, with one last glance in his direction, his father walked casually across the yard to his mother. After a quick exchange, the two of them went inside and retired for the evening.

“What the fuck was that?” Blake growled.

That was his father making a huge, irreparable dent in their relationship. One that wasn’t going to heal easily.

––––––––

AIDAN TOSSED HIS EMPTYglass into the garden and cursed angrily.

“Tell me,” Daniel growled, picking up that shit had just gone down.

Where did he start?

“Uncle Andrew just got White Privileged Man of the Year,” Blake answered, shaking his head.

That was a good start.

“What am I missing?” Daniel’s brows bunched.

“I take it you’re sleeping with Lily.” Blake crossed his arms.

Aidan let out a long sigh and nodded.

“Jesus, what did he do?” Daniel asked.

“Basically, told her she wasn’t good enough for any man in this family and that she should hightail it back to Chicago and her mediocre life,” Aidan said. “And yes, I’m fucking her.”

“Aides, you just let him—”

“Don’t.” Aidan held up his hand to his older cousin. “It would’ve made things worse if I’d defended her. I did try, but she cut me off.”

It was a shit excuse, even to his own ears.

“Why the hell would he do that?” Jacob asked.

“He’s been on my case about getting married to a socialite or an appropriate woman who will fit into our family.”
