CHAPTER TWENTY

Lily closed her eyesas the jet landed on the runway. The bumps almost jolted her out of the nightmare she was in.

Except this was her life.

Her dad was dying.

For over ten hours, since leaving the Maui beachfront property, Lily had been in transit.

She’d said goodbye to Emma, then traveled to the airport with Daniel and Harper, who had got her settled in on the plane.

The waiting to take off had been painful.

Now, after an eight-hour flight, directly from Maui to Chicago, she was home.

It was already after two in the afternoon in Chicago, and it looked freezing outside. Because it was. There was snow on the ground. Thankfully, Emma had reminded her to pull her winter coat out before she left the house.

Daniel had booked a car to collect her and take her directly to the hospital. Or his secretary did. Right now, she was on track to arrive by four p.m. and was hoping like hell her dad was still alive.

Hang in there, Dad.

It was nine a.m. back in Hawaii. They’d all be excitedly preparing for the wedding. Lily couldn’t believe she’d gone all the way to Maui only to have this happen.

It was something to consider another day. Right now, she was bone tired.

Lily had tried to sleep during the flight, and she had. Sort of. Thoughts of Aidan and her father merging together in a confusing movie had played in her dreams.

She’d awoken with tears in her eyes at one point.

One fucking night, Lily, and then you are mine.

She reminded herself he hadn’t been sober, and he was a wealthy, gorgeous man who wasn’t used to being told no.

Aidan would soon forget her.

After watching his father intimidate and humiliate her, his reaction last night was one of guilt. Nothing more.

Still, Lily wished they’d had the opportunity to say goodbye. Despite her cynicism, she had enjoyed their time together and was realizing with every mile now between them, and every hour that passed, just how much she liked him.

They had connected. She couldn’t deny that.

But it didn’t change the fundamental barriers and differences between them.

Lily’s mind was way too full, and her emotions were raw right now, knowing she had to say goodbye to her dad. When she’d caught her breath, she would text him to say goodbye and wish him well.
