Even if something deep inside her curled up in a little ball and felt a much bigger loss than she was ever expecting.

Today, nothing mattered except getting to the hospital to see her dad. Everything else could wait.

Everything and everyone.

Well, except Matt.

Lily had messaged her boss to let him know it was unlikely she’d be back at work on Wednesday because her father was in hospital.

Matt knew her dad was ill. He’d replied, asking if she needed a ride from the airport and if he could do anything.

Lily thought that was very nice.

She’d thanked him and declined.

She couldn’t afford very much time off, but there was no way she was going to work and leaving her dad’s bedside. Or the day after he died. Her mom had said it would happen anytime, so Lily would dig into her savings and use the rest of her leave.

Lily pulled her bag onto her shoulder, collected her carry on, and thanked the flight crew as she descended the Dufort jet.

As her feet hit the tarmac, she glanced back at the black aircraft and let out a long sigh, taking in the last of her incredible Hawaiian adventure and farewelling the lavish lifestyle and extravagant travel.

It was safe to say she would never fly first class again. Or on a private jet.

Goodbye, Aidan.

What a wild few days it had been.

Perhaps one day she would meet another man like him. Someone successful, who came from humble beginnings.

Someone who would sweep her off her feet and stick up for her if anyone tried to make her feel less than she deserved.

Maybe that man would be in Paris when she finally visited.

First, she had to get her bachelor’s degree in education. Then she could start planning her wedding to Pierre or Francois, or whoever her future husband might be.

Aidan’s dark eyes came flashing into her mind.

If you think I’m a man who will give up, then you don’t know me.

Lily shivered and watched her luggage being loaded into the SUV. She wrapped her coat around her tightly, shaking off Aidan’s words.

But they wouldn’t fade away.

He hadn’t meant them.

Had he?

“This way, please, ma’am,” the driver said, and she climbed into the back seat. The heat was very welcome and was a reminder she had left the tropical island breezes behind. And with them, the tall, dark, handsome man who kissed like a God.

An hour later, Lily was walking into her father’s hospital room. Her mom leaped up and enveloped her in a tight embrace and began to sob.

“Is he still alive?”
