Not yet. Not when I hadn’t processed it fully myself.

CHAPTER 36

Angel

“Is this all reallynecessary?” I asked for the thousandth time, resisting the urge to peel the blindfold to get a forbidden peak. “Are you showing me your kill chamber or something?” I joked with a chuckle after hearing the faint echoes of his footsteps against metal.

His chest rumbled with his chuckle, making my ears ache with pleasure upon hearing it. “You’ve already seen my kill chamber. Quit asking, I’m not going to tell you anything, so be patient.”

I had no idea what this surprise could possibly be. All I knew was we drove a bit of a distance, definitely out of the city because I could hear the bustling noise die down as we drove. But that’s all I could surmise. I couldn’t take any other guesses besides us being somewhere with a lot of metal because his footfalls sounded like they were against metal grates. So, maybe a warehouse? But the air felt too stuffy to be a warehouse.

I couldn’t feel around for a better idea either because Nikolai refused to let me explore, keeping me tight in his arms as he carried me off to—hopefully not—my doom. I doubt he’d wait all this time to get rid of me, so I was hopeful he wasn’t bringing me to my death.

The sound of locks clicking and a heavy door opening followed Nikolai’s voice when he said something in Russian. I could feel the air slamming against me when the door opened, followed by familiar voices.

“Hundred bucks Nikolai gets slapped.” Lev—I think—snickered before a slapping sound was heard.

“You’re on.” I think it was Arseny, or Alexei, but I would be more than willing to bet it was Arseny given that they accepted the bet. But also, Arseny’s voice was more jovial compared to his twin’s more serious tone.

“Why do they think I’m going to slap you?” Should I be worried about this surprise now? Was this some sick joke?

“Well... I went into this thing with good intentions, but I might have been an asshole and didn’t think about things from your perspective in my excitement.” Nikolai sounded uncomfortable as he set me down on my feet.

“Nikolai, what did you do?” Did he kill someone who mattered to me? No, he would have told me if he decided to.

Is he selling me out?

Slowly, the pressure around my eyes lessened when the blindfold was removed to reveal Nikolai’s nervous smile. Taking in a deep breath, he leaned in and kissed my forehead softly. “I’ll take whatever you throw at me later, but just know that I’ll be right behind you.” He whispered against me before turning me around by my shoulders, keeping his hands there afterwards.

My eyes widened in shock at the sight before me.

Fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. That’s our body’s natural responses to any perceived threat. And right now, my brain cycled through all four of them as my body tensed up. But I wasn’t sure why my body tensed up. Was it to fight? Run? Freeze? Definitely not fawn. My legs were itching to bolt, but my arms wanted to swing. But I couldn’t move because my chest felt like a truck sat on it.

Then, the voice of my nightmares spat its poisonous venom at me, “Was wondering where the fuck you went to, you triad trash. See you put yourself to use being a bratva bitch.”

His words made something within me snap. The scream of anguish from the trauma hitting me full force didn’t even sound like me—it sounded like some feral animal. I don’t know exactly how, but I went from one end of the room to being on top of a toppled monster who remained bound to the metal chair. I guess this is what people meant by being blinded by rage because it felt like my body moved on its own, acting upon the pent up anger that exploded in an instant. It was as if my mind was in a red haze.
