“Mmm, I suppose so...” my voice trailed off as Viper appeared from the hallway, his eyes latching onto mine—and he didnotlook happy. When we had gotten back, he had gone to his room, and I hadn’t been invited. In fact, the door had been shut and locked, leaving me out in the lounge.

And two flat tires on the Tahoe guaranteed I wasn’t going anywhere.

As it turns out, the rental wasn’t really an off-roading kind of vehicle. However, wehadmade it back.

“You’re a detective kind of woman, right?” Tippy’s voice brought me back to reality. “Because if that’s the case, I have something for you to look into.”

“I’m just a journalist, but yeah, okay,” I said, trying to sound more excited than I was. I didn’t have time to start working on something else when I was still trying to locate the hitmen behind Viper.

“Perfect, so you know Nitro, right?”

My nose crinkled in disgust at the sound of his name. “Yeah, I do.”

“I need you to figure out what the hell he’s planning over there,” he said, pulling a cigarette out of his vest pocket. “I know they’ve got something up their sleeve, and I need to know whatever it is.”

“And how am I supposed to go about doing that when they one, hateme, and two, they know who I am? There’s no way to be sneaky about anything when it comes to them.” I narrowed my eyes at Tippy. His job for me sounded like a great way to get into an even bigger mess than we were already in.

“You’re a smart woman. I’m sure you can figure it out.”

“I don’t think—”

“I need to talk to you,” Viper cut in, his presence coming as a relief. “Now.”

“I’m not done with my conversation with your woman, VP.” Tippy glared up at Viper, shaking his head. “She’s going to help us out with the Silent Kings. You and I already know they probably ripped us off, and I want her help.”

“I don’t think she’s going to be much help,” Viper snapped. “I’m not letting her do that.”

“Well, I guess it’s a matter of ranks, isn’t it?” Tippy raised a challenging eyebrow. “I think what I say goes.”

“We’ll take it to a vote at the next meeting then.”

My eyes bounced between the two of them as a silent tension built between them. Neither of them looked happy with the other, and I wondered if this was a norm for the two. or if Viper was on edge abouteveryone.

Including his president.

“We’ll put it to a vote,” Tippy finally said with a sigh, his face relaxing. “If the rest of the club doesn’t think it’s a good idea, then I’ll agree with them.”

“Thanks,” Viper said with a nod, grabbing my hand and tugging me toward his room. I grabbed up my drink and let him lead me, sipping on the tangy drink Sarah had made me.

“What is it?” I demanded as we entered, and he shut the door behind me. “Because I know that’s not your sex face.”

He shook his head at me, his face staying expressionless. “I need you to call Vinny.”

Oh shit, Vinny.

I dug my phone out of my pocket, but as I lit up the screen, there were no missed calls—which struck me a little funny. I figured after the intense phone call we’d had, he would’ve been reaching out.

But I guess not.

“I need you to tell him to come early.”

I looked up from the screen to Viper. “Is something wrong?”

“Why can you not just do what I ask without questioningeverything.” Viper’s jaw tensed as he looked down at me. “Just fucking do it.”

“Uh, you cannottalk to me like that.” I narrowed my eyes at him. “I’m not your slave.”

“Wow, okay, will youpleasecall Vinny and ask him to come early?”
