“He’s going to want to know why,” I folded my arms across my chest, even though I knew that he had already been asked to come early.

“You know why he needs to come early.”

“So do I tell him that?”

“Sure.”

With a shrug, I unfolded my arms and hit the call button beside his name, putting the phone up to my ear and giving Viper a smirk.

He just shook his head at me.

“What the hell was that about earlier?” Vinny demanded as soon as the lines connected. “That’s not fucking cool, kid. You had me worried. I’m boarding a flight to Sans Verta right now.”

“Wait, you are?”

“Yeah, of course I am. I was thinking I was going to be looking for your body—and can you imagine how pissed your dad would be at me if I got you killed?”

“I mean, he probably wouldn’t bethatsurprised,” I joked. Viper narrowed his eyes at me. I put the phone on speaker.

“Ha ha, not funny,” he retorted. “Seriously, are you safe now? You’re not staying at the clubhouse, are you? You two ought to get the hell out of town until I can get there. Has someone called Frankie? You could stay with him.”

“We can’t stay there,” Viper spoke up. “I think it’d be too suspicious.”

“You’re not wrong, but does Frankie know?”

“Yeah,” we both said simultaneously.

“I can’t believe you’ve gotten so wrapped up in this shit, Hannah. I just wanted you to see a little bit of the culture that I was from—meet some of the guys that mean a lot to me. Instead, you went off and got hooked up with one, and then got involved in some sort of clusterfuck.”

“Well, she isyourniece,” Viper grunted. He met my eyes, and the gleam in them set my body on fire.

Oof.

“So what’s your plan then?” Vinny asked, his voice less than enthused. “We know how these types of inside jobs go—someone always dies.”

“Well, that’s a real fucking bright outlook.”

“You know it’s true, Ronny.” Vinny let out a heavy sigh. “You need to figure out who your friends are.” The comment triggered me.

Where is Gunner?

I blinked a few times, the realization that I hadn’t seen him since he left the clubhouse that morning hitting me like a ton of bricks...

Is he okay?

“I’ll be there in about five hours. I’m not showing up to that clubhouse, though. I’ll stay in a hotel in Freemont. If I roll in, there’ll be more problems than just some hit.”

“Yeah, okay. Just send Hannah a text when you’re there, and we’ll come to you.”

“No tails.”

“No tails,” Viper repeated. He then reached over and ended the call, the screen going dark. “How the hell did Vinny know there was already a hit on me?”

“I told him on the way to the desert. That’s why he was already heading here. I asked him to.”

“Ballsy move not to ask me first.”

“I know, but it needed to be done. I had no idea if we were driving into a trap. I was just doing the right thing—and itwasthe right thing. He’s going to be here a lot sooner than he otherwise would’ve been.”
