Was he the one who shot at us?

As much as I felt like it was a possibility... It didn’t really make sense. Viper had said they had a clear shot but hadn’t taken it. So, that had to be someone else. And speaking of Viper... Where was he?

And Gunner?

I knew that Viper was still alive based on how they were talking, but Gunner?Ugh.I didn’t even want to think about it. I shut my eyes again, my stomach swirling as nausea rolled through my body. I swallowed the bile rising in my throat, desperate to stop myself from vomiting...

Because then they might know I’m awake.

Taking another deep breath to steady my racing heart, I slowly moved my bound hands, hoping that my crossbody bag was still on—and it was. I shifted slightly to the right, digging what little length of my fingers I could into my purse. My fingers brushed against my phone, my heart jumping with excitement.

They must’ve thought I’d stay passed out.

Jokes on them.

Using two fingers, I slid the phone out, carefully setting it on the side of my head opposite the guys. However, the moment the phone screen lit up, I cringed.

It wasbright.

Shit, shit, shit.

I quickly hit the lock button as the passenger—the one I had no idea who he was—spun around in his seat.

“I think there might be someone behind us,” he said to Tippy. “I thought I just saw headlights behind us.”

“No one is going to be out here.” Tippy’s voice was flat. “And if there is, they’re up to the same kind of shit we are.”

Great. We’re in the land of bad guys.

Turning my head back to the phone, I quickly turned down the brightness, though I knew it wouldn’t be enough. I had averyshort amount of time to send out an SOS before the passenger seat guy noticed. I opened the screen, going to my text thread, and then locked it back again, my eyes darting back toward the front.

No one noticed.

I lit it back up again, my heart sinking as I saw minimum service. However, I had to try...

But then the van came to an abrupt halt.

“All right, let’s get her.” Tippy said, before the sounds of the doors opening filled the night.

Fuck.

I moved fast, hearing their footsteps crunching on the gravel around me. I hit the ‘share my location’ button to Vinny, who just so happened to be who my text thread was open to.

And then I typed outSOS.

The sound of the van’s back door handles clicking open caused me to pause, and I slid the phone up into the corner of the back. It wasn’t exactly out of sight...

But maybe they’d just think it fell out.

“Damn, she’s pretty,” Tippy’s associate muttered as he reached in and grabbed my arms. I kept my eyes shut, trying to be as limp as possible as he dragged me out of the back of the van, my bare legs scraping across the metal. I bit my lip, holding back the cry of pain that threatened to escape.

The sand was warm against my skin, though the night air was chilly, goosebumps forming on my arms and legs as I heard the van doors close above me.

I’m going to die if I don’t do something.

But I felt...weak.Tippy’s helper was dragging me across the sandy desert and even when I tried, I could barely move my feet. I had always been the kind of woman who saved herself—and who didn’t need anyone.

But this time, I wasn’t sure that I was going to get free.
